Author Topic: proclaim kernal selection?

Topic Original "No modification"
ok so my optimous Q finally broke (thank god i hated that POS sprint tower thing) and i claimed my 18mo protection plan......the phone that i am elagable to buy with the amount about to be refunded to me (plus the new cost of a replacment plan of course) happens to be the Samsung galaxy proclaim.

so i start to google around for root solutions for the proclaim and turn up about 4 different kernals and what appears 4 different methods to root (if i understand correctly all using ODIN?)

Method 1 already ruled out due to me reading threads and it breaking SD mounting via windows (even tho aparently this is still an existing bug?) but for a reference i will list the link:
http://forums.acsyndicate.net/showthread.php?5505-ACS-Root-For-the-Samsung-Illusion-Proclaim

Method 2 (which i discovered from the previous links thread) has just one kernal to flash and no flashing of the stock kernal over the modified kernal:
http://androidarea51.com/***-all-things-root-***-150/brandnew-ak51pro-prerooted-one-flash-your-done/

Method 3: this is the one i dont get....i dont understand if its a fix for the SD mounting issue and flashes over the previous link or if it is its own stand alone kernal that i flash as is to the phone using ODIN or what is going on here exactly as it seems minimal direction/information was given in the post and the thread its self is only 2 pages long all with thanks and a few bugs listed:
http://androidarea51.com/***-all-things-root-***-150/(kernel)-proclaim-rooted-test-kernel/

my question is (seeing as how i already know i dont want to use Method 1) what method do i want to use? or is all the features and things discussed in method 3 all updated on method 2?

im a complete android noob here im just trying to make for a smooth transition for my back-up that i intend on using titan for (previous phone i also rooted but it was as simple as a .bat file) to my new proclaim.

As a side question....is there any way to transfer or save my phone back-up directly to the PC as in real time as my SD card is full.....tho i suppose i could dump my music and media folder manually to my computer to clear some space its just a thought i have been pondering.

The method that I used involved flashing a pre rooted kernel using ODIN and then reflashing the stock kernel because the pre rooted kernel has a bug that won't allow you to get cell service. Thus method worked for me and didn't break my as card.

I used the method that supposedly has the SD card issue but I'm not even sure why that matters - I use airdroid app to transfer everything from the PC to my phone.

the sdcard fix is very simple:

Make sure superuser is installed
Get ES file explorer
In the settings for ES, enable root access / editing.
Browse to /etc/vold.fstab
Edit(open with) with the es text utility app
find the line in the vold.fstab file that says "ums_path = /sys/devices/platform/usb_mass_storage/lun0/file"
Change the lun0 to lun1
Save it
Reboot.
