Author Topic: [EXPERIMENTAL] Galaxy Appeal root/CWMR

Topic Modified: 22/02/13 (12:30) AM
This thread is outdated, please see the official release for the functional image. The links below may not be supported.

I have successfully built a version of CWMR for the Galaxy Appeal and it needs tested. The links are here:

MAJOR UPDATE: CWM not only builds from source, but it now boots!

NOTE: use enter on qwerty keyboard to select!

http://arearom.com/devuploads/motorhead/private/recovery.img.tar

http://arearom.com/devuploads/motorhead/public/appeal_root.zip
If you need instructions to test this, you probably shouldn't be testing things ;)

(You must be registered to download the files)

LATEST FILE:
Here's an update.zip to try and root this device:
Root update.zip

To install:
1. Download the zip and copy it to your SD card

2. Shut the device down and boot to recovery mode (T + power)

3. Choose "apply update.zip from sd card"

4. Reboot

Please notify me if you encounter any errors

Never seen a phone with pit file that uses a recovery.img does someone have a working pull of the pit file i could look at?

if you tell me how lol... if you go to the phone thread in AR candidates all the background is in there... but no working pit file that i'm aware of... i tried to do a heimdall pull, but the create packages tab is grayed out and i tried to download pit through heimdall and that failed... kies says the phone does not support initialisation so i couldnt even try getting factory firmware with an upgrade, couldnt do emergency firmware recovery because it asks for a recovery code that i dont have.

where does odin save pit when its flashing? would it save to windows temp folder maybe?

and i kinda went on a whim out of desparation and odin flashed cwm for an ace plus (device.xml in the kies folder lists gt s7500 (ace plus) as base model) so i dont have stock recovery either, or any kind of working recovery, if i did i could flash the root.zip Motorhead built.

i'm relatively noob and trying to learn... with the added benefit i have general knowledge, and i'm competent to figure things out somewhat and i'm willing to work this phone until i brick it, and it's a sammy so all is well lol

DH, thus is a Samsung we're talking about, nothing is standard ;). The Ace + uses a recovery.img also, so either we're using the wrond odin or Samsung pulled another weird move.

KRaZyWaKa, I have another test image ready.

Actually, we do have one tester. We are also in need of the stock recovery.img and system.img.

Also, I will be putting a link on the top post to an experimental root zip that should work unlike universal GB root.

I've already tried that DH, it's a no go, Sandspeed told me how to do it, it fails... I don't remember exactly what the issue was, I just know it failed... ah Hell you pulled me in lol hope you're on irc... Gonna fire up the PC and run it again so I can give you a detailed rundown of what goes on.

ok phone in download mode all the usual usb debug stay on while charging blah blah,

zadig driver installed, utilities tab, detect device, device detected, ok now in the download pit box i have to click save as first and pick a location/filename... download is greyed out until i do that, save as... I827 in the heimdall folder, hitting download... output log as follows... basically same error kies gives me, phone is not set up for initialisation is how it reads in kies... so att did somethiong to disable initialisation is what i'm figuring lol  or i fubared everything when i flash-fudged stock recovey... i'm gonna try it again with the sim card in even though the sim isnt activated, who knows might make a difference

There are no functional aftermarket recoveries yet. We're workong on that.

As far as booting to recovery, the stock configuration may be different. I don't actually own an Appeal, I just know it's inner workings.

hello lyric, I am KRaZy WaKa,  I have the Galaxy Appeal, and am the current tester for it here at AA51...

to boot into recovery, first make sure the phone is off, then hold T+Power, at first vibration leave go of power while continuing to hold T, when recovery comes up you can release T...

if you release the wrong button (i.e. T instead of power) or the right button at the wrong time (i.e. releasing T at any time before recovery screen comes up) you will fail to boot into recovery and it should then boot into the phone, so you'll have to shut the phone down again, and attempt to boot into recovery one more time being extra careful to hold and release the buttons at the right time.

what exactly happens when you try to boot to recovery? i have had issues with getting mine into recovery due to the awkwardness of the keyboard, my finger rolls off the T key before i want it to(small keys big fingers lol), and i don't see why moving a file to your sd card would cause anything to go awry with the phone... maybe describe in more detail what exactly you did.

sorry i didnt get on IRC last night to help you out, I was asleep and only received Motorheads text this morning when I woke up.

I would like to know if any one has been successful yet?

That's what we'd like to know lol... So if anyone has tested the update.zip root method supplied here please let us know how you made out... Further development on the appeal depends on somebody obtaining root privileges, once that is achieved we can get necessary files to build custom recovery and ROMs... As this phone shows a lot of potential for customization and modification, including possible ICS or maybe even JB ROMs, and the possibility to achieve a1ghz or more overclock... We need you to help us help you if you wanna see the greatest possible use out of your Samsung Galaxy Appeal.

Great job on getting this root project started guys. been waiting a while for this to happen, as much as i would like to help beta test this i just don't have the expirience to do so and i don't know how to back up all of my data/contacts/messages/settings etc etc  to a local storage device.

Good luck with the rooting and i hope it all goes well.

The update.zip method is easy enough that you can manage it gromit :). However, update.zips have a tendancy to wipe the data so...

Gromit, you could run a backup through Samsung Kies, it will back up all personal data... And as far as contacts, you can sync them, your calendar and a bunch of other stuff to your google account... And then sync back to your phone (or any Android phone for that matter) if your personal data gets wiped... The only thing that can't be easily backed up is app data (i.e. Saved account info for Facebook) and you could always put that info back in... And Kies might even back that stuff up to, i'm just not 100% sure about that in particular... And you San copy your whole sd card and usb storage to your pc for pictures, music, and video just in case

Thanks for the replies but i think i'll wait untill someone reports back with a succesfull root of the SGH-i827 before i try it myself, that is unless i can do a full backup with the suggested methods. i know i'll loose only a small portion of data.

I'll give it a week and keep an eye on this project untill it's complete and out of beta so to speak with full recovery etc.

After copying the update.zip to my phone and entering recovery mode to apply the update i recieved this message

-- Install /sdcard ...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:signature verification failed
install_package = (2)
Installation aborted.

I seem to get this with most root packages including gingerbreak etc.

I sincerly hope you guys can figure out how to root this so i can get rid of all the AT&T bloatware and all the other crap, i would love to have this phone with the bare bones android OS and add what i need to it. FYI i bought this phone in the US and i'm using it in the UK. absolutly love it to bits but like i said all the crap that's pre installed is just getting annoying.
