After numerous flashes, most of which failed, CWM is finally functional on the Appeal!

The previous message no longer applies, Home, Power and Enter all work 100% for selecting your flashable zip.

CWM 5.0.2.8 Appeal (see changelog)

To install:
1. Download the file and place it in an easy to find location
2. Download Odin3 v1.85
3. Launch Odin and boot your Appeal into download mode
4. Using the original cable, or a known working one, flash the recovery image to the device. (NOTE: Recovery image goes in PDA slot and MAKE SURE repartition is unchecked)
5. Reboot to recovery

Appeal Root

NOTE: Requires CWM 5.0.2.8 Appeal to be installed

Appeal Root update.zip

To install:

1. Download the zip and copy it to your SD card

2. Shut the device down and boot to recovery mode (T + power)

3. Choose "apply update from sd card"

4. Reboot

KRaZy is working on a deodexed and debloated ROM. As it sits, you can't debloat just yet unless you wanna get your hands dirty ;).

one warning.
DO NOT fix permisions from the CWM custom recovery, it causes bootloops back to the recovery!!

If you do, reflash the "Appeal.cwm.5028.tar" file thru Odin3_v1.85.

*FIX PERMISION breaks the recovery
Android is very dependent on the right permissions, if you adjust file permissions incorrectly you get a bootloop.

Nice find! I will have to look at that script (it always seems to cause headaches on new stuff).

hopefully within the next week Gromit, if life doesnt keep interfering lmao...

did you flash recovery and root your appeal? if so, how did it go for you? we depend on the feedback of the end user to make sure everything is as perfect and smooth as possible...

hi all!!

2 things to note.

1) busybox v1.20.0 seems to work best with this Gingerbread/ ICS hybrid ROM, installed @ /system/xbin/.

2) bootloop to recovery also happens when CWM Rom Manager is used to boot into recovery.

managed to freeze all bloatware with out consequence but having a little trbl with wifi tethering.
the tethering manager app must set a value (possibly in build.prop) when auth by AT&T.

1)its not a hybrid rom its just custom recovery and root... but thanks for the tip on busybox! i'll have to check it out myself and add it to the install instructions and notes at OP

2) You should never use Rom Manager with an unsupported phone for that reason it has a tendency to brick unsupported phones also.

Hi KRaZy:

The hybrid i was refering to is the samsung ROM designated "I827UCLE3" or in my case I had an AT&T push ATO  made it "I827UCLJ2" the ROM is described as GB with ICS libs and tweaks.

As for the ROM MANGER call to boot recovery, I've done it sucessfully in 6 other phone from HTC mytouch,  Droid2 global ans well as samsung Prevail models, non of the have official CWM recoveries.
I may have gotten lucky, but that's alot of luck.

A little background if i may.
I'm not a "DEV" but have cooked rom source and know linux and jave very well. I usually hang at XDA and Cyanogenmod for the most part.
I new to this site so please forgive any transgressions but i don't want to come off as a newb.

Lol, its all good, I hope I didn't offend you... I'm new to the development end of things myself the appeal is both my learning tool and a personal project lol, I brought it here seeking help because I knew they deal with prepaid, and I have found great help and guidance here as well as info though tut's at xda... I just didn't want the less experienced noobish users getting themselves in trouble with ROM manager as it seems to be a common issue with unsupported devices... And as far as the hybrid ROM, my appeal is running uclc6 stock and I don't use it on carrier service so I dunno what goes on with updates
