    2. Boot device into Download Mode by pressing Vol down+power

    3. Using a known working DATA TRANSFER CABLE, plug the cable into your device and wait for the yellow square to show up. Once it does, uncheck the reboot option, put the tar file in the PDA slot and click start.

Seems theres a lot or problems with this...the files below are for root only...if your going to install a rom then you can skip the rest of this post....the rom is already rooted....

After recovery is flashed don't reboot the OS. Go straight into recovery then restore the Nandroid.

You will need all the files above in the sdcard(external sdcard on this phone) directory clockworkmod/backup/root/.
After the restore CWM will remain on the phone. If you don't do this correctly the recovery will revert back to the stock recovery & you will have to start over from the beginning.

Just a little note on adding the files to CWM you need to make a folder and name it root then had the files kingmt01 has.

Krazy DH has the files he needs to start on a rom..but the way things are going it will be a while yet...

Thanks to Motorhead for CWM and kingmt01 for the root..

Back to stock it's coming. Sorry I've been really busy lately. I need some PC time to get the files up. Of course everyone should make their own backup before following this but I always try to cover those that don't.

      Deeper down the rabbit hole!!!!
Reason I want a centura backup is to dig through it for research for the Appeal (very closely related, Appeal only has GB) and maybe throw together WaKd OuT! ROM (modified from stock) for the Centura, something similar to my Appeal build.

I keep getting an md5 mismatch when trying to restore. I will try re-downloading everything.

Update: Deleted the nandroid.md5 contents and it worked fine.

Thanks a lot for the root and cwm recovery, but I don't quite follow/understand this guide.

Could you be more specific? It would help me and a lot of others.

    2. Boot device into download mode. How do you do that? Same as recovery mode?

@cjmccormick: I thought about writing a more extensive guide as my first small contribution to the site. In the mean time I can help you out on steam chat if you still need it. Send me a PM and I'll get you my steam info.

    to get you started:

DO SO AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
YOU WILL LOSE ALL INFO STORED ON YOUR PHONE( I did ) so make sure you back up any pics or contacts(etc) that you dont want to lose!!!

Download the .tar file by clicking on the banner in the first post that says "Download by clicking here"

    download odin here:
You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

download all the files that kingmt01 posted and make sure to put them in a folder on your sd card with the path specified in that post.

to put your device in download mode:
    1. turn off your phone.
    2. While holding the volume down button turn on the phone.
    3. at the prompt, press the volume up key to go into download mode.

From here you need to start odin3 and then plug your phone into your comp via usb. The status area at the left (labeled ID:COM ) should turn yellow. Below that there should be some options. Unselect 'automatic reboot'. in the lower right side there should be a button labelled 'PDA'. click that and navigate to the centura-cwm-6028.tar file. after that is done you should only have to press 'start'.
DO NOT TURN OFF YOUR PHONE UNTIL YOU ARE SURE THAT THE DOWNLOAD IS COMPLETE. To be safe you should give it a minute or so after the progress bar finishes and the odin program reports success, just to be sure.

Hold the pwr button to turn the phone off. It will automatically boot back up (mine did. ) so make sure that immediately  after the screen goes black you hold down the volume up button so when it comes back on you will be put into recovery mode.

navigate to the 'restore' and select the folder where you put all the files from the second post. the restore should take a little while to complete. once it is done you should be able to reboot your phone normally and be rooted.

I was surprised the phone had 4gb of internal memory and it was labelled 'sdcard' in the OS. That however is not your sd card. These phones do not come with a micro sd card so you will have to buy one if you don't have one around. After putting it in your phone then plug it into your computer via usb ( it should connect as 'usb storage/media device'), navigate to your external storage folder, create the directories as per instructions and place the files in there. Then when you run cwm recovery it should be able to find them automatically and put them on a list for you to choose.

Seems to be a lot of problems with this so here we go again..
1.Make sure you have the Samsung Drivers installed on your pc
2.Down load the tar file from CWM and place in a folder on your desk top named Centura.
3.Download all the files for root from kingmt01 post, place those in the centura folder
4.Download odin. place that in the centura folder. Now we have every thing we need.
5.Make sure you have a sd card in your phone.
6.To get into download, hold vol down and power till your phone vib's then let go of power, you will have a warning press vol up to get in to download mode.
7.Open odin plug your phone in,if you done every thing right so far you will see a yellow box in odin with a com # in it.
8.Click on the PDA button find your centura folder and click on the tar file.
9.Uncheck the reboot box,hit the start button, let it do its thing,it will have a green box that says pass.do not turn off your phone.
10.Now unplug your phone and hold vol up and power till it vibs let go of power only, you should now be in CWM.
11.Now scroll to backup and restore and make a backup.Let it do its thing, when done reboot.
12.Now plug your phone back in,let your pc find it,when it does it will have a sdcard and usb storage click on sdcard, you will see a folder that says clockworkmode, open that up and you will see a folder that says backup, open that up and make a new folder in there and rename it root.
13.Copy and paste all the files from kingmt01 post in the folder you just made called root.
14.Now close all the folders, and reboot into recovery, hold vol up and power till it vibs then let go of power, you should now be in CWM.
15.Scroll to backup and restore, restore, clockworkmode, backup, root, hit thge power button to install,if you done every thing up to this point right you will see it backing up.when it says restore completed you can now reboot your phone.
16.Pat your self on the back you have just rooted the Centura....this may be long but it will work....read read read then do...if you mess it up its no ones fault but your own

After you boot back up you will get a popup wanting you do update, click install and it will reboot your phone into clockworkmode will give you a warning its not signed, make sure no is highlighted and hit the power button, your phone will reboot and no more pesky popup. you will still get a yellow ! you can either get a jig for it or wait till the rom is released.

I have booted into recovery 9 times with 3 different sd cards 4 8 32 gb still get Error mounting /sd-ext. couldn't open directory no files found.Am I missing some thing?

That's because there is no sd-ext. In recovery, it sees the internal as /emmc and external as /sdcard.

The update failed on my centura .. all seems well. Had a time getting rid of google craps... finally had to browse with root and remove maps, hangouts etc.. maybe nothing is messed up...  all seems well now after some errors the apps disapeared from launcher

    Sent from my SCH-S738C

ok I figured out how to install the ota update that wanted to install.
Iedited out the checks from the zip renamed it update.zip and installed it without any trouble.
cwr warned that the recovery would cause me to lose root and had a nice little option to correct that issue.
I still had partial root and was able to correct it by installing chainfire's su and reinstalling busybox.. all looks good now
only reason i knew root was not correct was luckypatcher errored on me while patching a app with ad's
not sure what improvments the update made if any but its still ics 4.04 so it wasn't a os upgrade.

thanks for the root help guys  ;-)
