When you download the rooted files they just download .tar not .tar.a you must add the .a after downloading them!!

My friends phone has cwm now, but there was not a backup when I installed cwm. Do w have to download the backup for root or is it supposed to show up by itself?

Got a few questions about cwm... when in recovery what is the update zip also it has an option for factory reset... if. Ozone was to choose factory reset would cwm be gone?

Update.zip can be used to upgrade via an official upgrade ZIP file. It won't work with most third party firmware.

You can safely factory reset and CWM will remain.

I found that if you use the root2.zip listed in the Topic Centura Root instead of the ones individually listed here it should fix your md5 problems.

how did you edit out the checks in waiting to install the update too
The update failed on my centura .. all seems well. Had a time getting rid of google craps... finally had to browse with root and remove maps, hangouts etc.. maybe nothing is messed up...  all seems well now after some errors the apps disapeared from launcher

    Sent from my SCH-S738C

ok I figured out how to install the ota update that wanted to install.
Iedited out the checks from the zip renamed it update.zip and installed it without any trouble.
cwr warned that the recovery would cause me to lose root and had a nice little option to correct that issue.
I still had partial root and was able to correct it by installing chainfire's su and reinstalling busybox.. all looks good now
only reason i knew root was not correct was luckypatcher errored on me while patching a app with ad's
not sure what improvments the update made if any but its still ics 4.04 so it wasn't a os upgrade.

thanks for the root help guys  ;-)

The ota update script has checks builtin (i used google and seen how to remove the checks) it was from some other guy having trouble updating his device.. so i carefully removed those checks. ... i jusf named it update.zip (it had some long name originally) then installed it from cwm recovery... had camera problems after the update so i went back to the scripf and removed all lines pertaining to the camera.. restored the backup to its pre-ota update state and installed the 2nd update revision from cwm

I ghink i still got the edited update.zip it you need it..think i have it.. then i used trianglaway and it got rid of the triangle and i think kt stopped the rom counter(i know it reset it ... and i think i used triangleaway before i did the ota update stuff

Sent from my SCH-S738C using Tapatalk 2

Why the checks make it not install must be due to the phone being rooted.. why would a samsung update not install on a samsung phone .. no idea...rooted seems the only answer... but since then i have had no update notifications

That would be awesome if you could upload it.  When I also looked up how to remove the checks I had edited it in a text file and removed the asserts but I assume I removed the wrong ones because I tried doing it like 5 times or more and my brother was on my wifi tether so I kept getting frustrated when he would  bitched me out because I was rebooting so much.

So, do I place these files on my external SD card BEFORE I go into Download Mode to flash CWM Recovery? Or do I keep my phone plugged in still after the recovery has been flashed in download mode and transfer the files and then go into recovery and restore the Nandroid? But can't I backup my phone in recovery and restore that after flashing CWM? Or does it HAVE to be the files you listed here and used to restore to?

You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
After recovery is flashed don't reboot the OS. Go straight into recovery then restore the Nandroid.

You will need all the files above in the sdcard(external sdcard on this phone) directory clockworkmod/backup/root/.
After the restore CWM will remain on the phone. If you don't do this correctly the recovery will revert back to the stock recovery & you will have to start over from the beginning.

The files on the post are to get root for your phone, you get cwm installed first, make a backup, then flash the files for root.the back up you make is in case you remove some thing you shouldnt,

if you follow the guide as stated you will have recovery, root in under 10 mins. with a back up

Not entirely true... I developed android using my phone :). All the up/downloads were done via mobile browsers. Opera seems to do pretty well.
