the file are alright i dont know what your doing wrong...if you want a stock backup backup the rom you have now, when its finished reboot then go back to recovery and install the backup you just made, before you reboot do a factory reset, then reboot, once it reboots dont sing in to any thing, let it boot all the way.now go back to recovery and back it up.you now have a stock rom.Take that one and copy it to your pc.

Nothing gets unziped its a folder and the folder gets placed on your sdcard as is.  The files are suppose to look like that because it came off of the phone wasnt made to look like a rom.

Ok i dont know why every one is having such a hard time getting this to work.I just DL it again put it on my phone and it loaded fine...........The folder called STOCK gets put on your sdcard in clockworkmod/backup just the way it is dont not unzip it,place your phone in recovery mod go to backup/restore then restore and find the stock you just put there, scrool down to it and it the power button, wait for it to install,go back and do a factory reset, then reboot, you are now back to stock.
If it still dosnt work or it says file not found try a different sdcard.

There is nothing wrong with the DL.

he folder called STOCK gets put on your sdcard in clockworkmod/backup just the way it is dont not unzip it,

In defense of those not familiar with CWM, in the first post you said

You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

Unzip to your desk top the copy folder to your sdcard under clockworkmode/backup

Now, knowing CWM, I know it expects a ZIP file, so I wouldn't unzip the download.

But those new to CWM? Or familar with tar balls in ODIN?

Thats because its a zip folder that contains the root folder, thus unzip to your desk top and place root folder on sdcard.

Thats because its a zip folder that contains the root folder, thus unzip to your desk top and place root folder on sdcard.

hmm.. all the versions of CWM I've used before work with ZIP files, not directories.

so stock.zip in post #1 contains one directory, named with the date and time of the backup:
    2013-06-13.21.57.10

In that directory are tar* files, img files, and and md5 file.

You said unzip the archive. It it supposed to unzip to a director named stock?
If I unzip it I don't get a directory named stock, just the 2013* directory.
jZip is not showing that path stored in the archive.

So what should I have on the SD card?
clockworkmod/backup/stock.zip (what I would expect form past experience)
clockworkmod/backup/2013-06-13.21.57.10/ (containing the tar and img files)
clockworkmod/backup/stock/2013-06-13.21.57.10/ (containing the tar and img files)

That appears to be the confusion. While I would expect the first I think some of the problems have been because of the confusion over the other 2 possibilities.

    * never seen tar.a before, but it appears that it is the actual tar archive as the tar files are 0 length.

The stock folder you place on your sdcard has all the files in it in a zip form so cwm can read them, the empty tar file are like that because it came from a stock phone and will be that way till its installed and files/apps/pics/music are added.
Its a zip for ease in uploading,it get extracted to your desktop any where u want it,its just to open it and get the folder thats in there.

the zip you extract to your desktop contains the folder you need to have cwm read it if the folder has a time stamp then thats it, that file goes in clockworkmod/backup/

    No.
system.tar is 0 bytes. system.tar.a is larger. If I rename system.tar.a to just system.tar it's a tar archive and I can manipulate it with normal Windows tools. Granted, *nix doesn't care about the file name so it'll happily work with the files.

Just odd to see them named that way.

system.tar is 0 for a reason its a stock rom and nothing has been added as i stated before. theres no reason to open those files any way the folder gets placed on the sdcard the way it is.

system.tar is 0 for a reason its a stock rom and nothing has been added as i stated before.

The tar.a files have the actual stock ROM contents though.
That was my question. Sort of odd to have a 0 size .tar as well.
Other CWM zips I've looked at don't use tar files like this.

    Quote
theres no reason to open those files any way the folder gets placed on the sdcard the way it is.

So, the answer to my earlier question then is

    SDcard: /clockworkmod/backup/stock.zip

    correct?

As for looking at the contents of the files, I was curious. How did you learn?
Magically wake up one day and know?

and yes but you dont need the root folder.the root is in the rom. and there 2 new stock DL on the forum

Not sure what root folder you mean.

I thought it was a pretty simple question.

If my SD card is drive E: in Windows

    the I have either
    1)  E:\clockworkmod\backup\stock.zip
    2)  E:\clockworkmod\backup\2013-06-13.21.57.10\
    3)  E:\clockworkmod\backup\stock\2013-06-13.21.57.10\

Any other version of CWM I would just put the file stock.zip in the root directory on the card (E:\) and be done.

Android developers speak some weird language that is part windows, part *nix, and something else thrown in.
I'm still trying to learn that extra bit.

The CWM zips I've used before have system and META-INF directories. Inside META-INF is a script that puts the files, links, permissions, etc correctly.
