Well,  lesson learned, take your time. Read, study, pick a part everything before you decide to root, flash, or install a custom rom!

So good thing my phone I bought a month ago, Huwaei Ascend 2 I got a 2 yr replacement warranty through walmart!  Going to  return that phone back and get credited for the amount the phone was bought for.

Now my question is. What is the best (Cheap under $150) Straight Talk Android Phone that is actually worth buying and rooting  and trying out custom roms?  I am asking for everyones opinions...users...devs....

I will be buying a new phone this week. Would like to have Ice Cream Sandwich, but if I must..I would stick with Gingerbread.

Thanks! Looking forward to all replies in the coming days...

Let me know. I appreciate help.
I can only 'talk' about the AT&T sim phones...(T-Mobile network data speed is < dialup for at least 50 miles from me, and AT&T has 3.5G here, so my choice is...)

Under 150, you got alot of choices.

Depends most on where you buy. For example, from GoPhone, the Avail ain't bad at all (It's what I use). Usually ~100-125

There's also stuff from StraightTalk (Some of the refurbished ones are pretty cheap)

Amazon ain't worth looking at (Such a pain)

eBay has a BIG selection, and can search for OS (Android), price (under 150), condition (DON'T check broken...lol), and US sellers only (Unless you want a REAL cheap China phone w/no support, no root, no roms, and breaks in less than 6 months)

Then, after looking at specs/etc, google the phone and the word "rom", no matter WHERE you decide to get it from.

    Read, learn, research.

What might be GREAT for me, might be too much for you, or not enough for you.

      Deeper down the rabbit hole!!!!
Samsung galaxy appeal is a decent budget phone with a slide out keyboard... its GB but we're looking to build ics for it in the future. Its an ATT Go Phone prepaid which you can use with ST byop plan... its right around 100, but price can fluctuate from 70 to 125, depending on where you get it and if its new or used... that's what I have currently... we have root rom and recovery for it, with more to come.

Direct from ST you can get the samsung galaxy centura which is a close relative to the appeal, without the slideout keyboard and a slightly bigger screen, its on verizon network,ICS native and $99.99... we have root and recovery for it as well, but they are currently in testing and should be released soon, along with a rom I am sure... this phone just came out about a month ago.

I recently bought my daughter a Verizon Droid x2 off of swappa.com for $45. I then was able to root the phone to ice via the xda forum. Phone is working great. I highly suggest you activate the phone on ST first, then root. (it was a major pain to activate with it rooted, customer service from ST is horrible.) I will try to link the ice alpha 3 root for you later you are interested.

You were able to activate a verizon branded phone on straight talk? Or was the droid x2 available through straight talk at one time?

Yes, the byod program for ST allows 3g Verizon phones to be activated on the ST network. Cost is $15 to activate.

Nice I didn't know that, last I was on the byod plan page it explicitly states they don't currently do verizon sprint any other st, net10 or whatever phones on the byod.
