Hello there, everyone. I'm not sure if this is phone specific, but what I've noticed is that the Appeal uses its Internal USB Card as mnt/sdcard, and uses the External SD Card as /mnt/sdcard/external_sd. And since most apps store their downloaded data on /sdcard, and not /sdcard/external_sd, this creates a rather large problem, since the Internal USB Card only has 1.84GB partitioned for application usage. According to the specs, the device can utilize up to a 32GB External Card.

What I would like to do is switch those around. I'd like to use the External Card as /sdcard, and the Internal Card as /sdcard/external_sd, or even /internal_usb. I would generally only use the Internal for backing up apps, and since Titanium Backup allows you to set a specific location to store backups, that will work just fine.

I have attempted making a few small changes to the vold.fstab file, but there are a lot more options on the Appeal than on the solutions that were posted about other phones. Each time I have modified anything, the phone will not detect either the Internal nor External Cards. Restoring the original fstab corrects the problem with no ill effects. I am attaching the stock vold.fstab that was found in /etc.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

      Deeper down the rabbit hole!!!!
lol shorrrt, we're working on the right solution for that, me and Motorhead have discussed that several times while we've been working to get cwm and root, that was/is one of my priorities with a rom build for the appeal, what is going on is the external sd is symlinked through the internal sd... dont know why they do it, it's apparently one of the many things that samsung does to complicate things  ;D  motorhead is actually looking into it, he worked on the samsung rugby smartphones and they had something similar going on, i believe he is gonna try to replicate the mounts that he has in his rugby ROM to the appeal...

we've discussed what would be of better use, i had mentioned using the onboard as swap/virtual RAM and he informed me that isn't a very viable solution

If you're familiar with raid setups in the PC world, where you basically join 2 harddrives on a software level so the OS reads them as 1 bigger hard drive that is one way we could go with it, i think that's how he has the Rugby project set up, but not my personal choice, as you could then have file fragments stretched across the 2 drives and if the sdcard fries then you have broken stuff, that's my ocd way of looking at it though in reality it will most likely not ever cause an issue lol

another option is break the symlink and have them both work as 2 totally separate entities, that would be my preferred method since i wouldnt wanna lose that extra 2GB of space lol... and in all reality 2GB is plenty for app storage then you have your external completely for personal junk (pictures, movies, music, and other doucments)...

In all honesty, that could very well be why Samsung has it set up the way it is, so you can access both internal and external in any situation basically have them working together but separately, but it makes it a mess when you're trying to keep things organized because in some situations you have the external readable separately and then you have it redundantly accessible through the internal symlink, and i have copied folders into themselves before back in like win 98 or something lol it can make one hell of a mess for you lol... i just dont like it from a technology standpoint lol.

another option would be to bypass internal completely making that 1.8 GB flash chip just some extra weight in the phone and use only the external sd, i have a 16GB sd so wouldnt affect me too much except i use utorrent on my phone for on the go access to stuff like if i wanna install ubuntu on a friends computer i can just download it on the spot over wifi if i dont have my flash drives on hand, sometimes i get the oppurtunity to make "surprise i need my computer fixed" house calls lol, wish people would call ahead sometimes or not wait til the last minute when i come to chill lmao... and when you have music and stuff on your phone already that 2gb will make a huge difference in those situations

keep your eyes out in the appeal forums for what we come up with... might just integrate it into a ROM...

i am hoping to be putting out a stripped down cleaned up semi-stock ROM  here very soon, Motorhead is working on his own thing for it as well... by the time we get to a full on AreaRom branded build we will probably be meeting somewhere in the middle.

Thank you for the reply! I was wondering if all of this Internal/External business if why I had such trouble applying the update.zip. I recall I placed it on the external card, but CWM couldn't find it. I must have been confusing what they call sdcard, and and usb storage. Heh. :o

I'll definitely keep a tab on the Appeal threads. Also, of all the options you mentioned about how to use the Internal, I'd prefer not to use a RAID-type setup. For the exact reason you mentioned; one breaks, all of the data on both is pretty much lost. I think using the internal as a separate entity would work best. But, since I have next to no knowledge about the inner-workings of these phones, I really can't say, huh? lol

    Thanks!

I released a test image to KRaZy earlier today that should fix the SD issue, and did correct the image problem. Upon his feedback, it will be updated on the CWM thread.

    *** Changelog ***
2/25/13: Added all the images in (no more bitmap errors), Home and power key work flawlessly for selection, USB mount mounts to externel (still testing flash location)

I'm curious, does that mean it's switched? Or is that not quite to where this post is?

Having not tested it personally, my information is only as reliable as the notes you guys provide. So far, KRaZy has reported that the external mounts via USB transfer, but not if the flash file locations are working properly. (External SD should be the primary zip location).

Oh, I could access both the external SD and internal USB card before this flash. Not sure if WaKa could do the same. I installed CWM v2, and as far as I can tell, it didn't change anything.

The way I want it set up is that the external is /sdcard and the internal shows as external_sd/. This would eliminate any space issues someone was having. The real big difference with build 2 is the bitmap errors, or rather the lack thereof.

KRaZy and I are working on a tool that will resolve the issue with the flash counter and updating CWM via odin.
