    !!!!! WARNING !!!!!

THIS HAS THE POTENTIAL OF BRICKING YOUR PHONE!!  MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING!!

NO ONE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR ACTIONS!  I PROVIDE THIS INFORMATION WITHOUT ANY GUARANTEE THAT IT WILL WORK ON YOUR DEVICE!!  USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!

Now that that is out of the way....

After loading your custom rom or recovery via Odin, you get Samsung's way of saying you did a bad thing when you loaded an unofficial rom!  When you load a rom via ODIN, it checks to see if it is an official load.  If not, you get a nice yellow triangle with an exclamation point in it.  Now this does not affect the operation of your phone, but it is annoying to some.

After some research, I have found out where this information is located and have written the attached script to remove the triangle.  I have tested this on my Samsung Galaxy Appeal (SGH-I827) and my Samsing Discover (SGH-S730G/M) and it does gets rid of the unsightly triangle.  Everything else works like before, just no triangle on boot.

NOTE:  You must have ROOT in order for this script to work!

NOTE:  I suggest you make a backup of mmcblk0p1 to your sdcard just in case you need to restore it as follows:

                  cat /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 > /mnt/sdcard/mmcblk0p1.sav

Here is my triangle away script.

In mmcblk0p1, offset 0x4E00, is the location where the update information is stored.

The byte at 0x4E00 should be 0x12 when an official load is present.  An unofficial load sets this to 0x11.  I reset it back to 0x12.
The byte at 0x4E04 contains the count of 'custom' roms loaded, this will be zeroed out.

The device model number starts at offset  0x4E0A.
The next 238 bytes  after the model number, starting at offset 0x4E12 are also zeroed to remove traces of the Odin load.

Unzip the attached file and put the triangleaway.sh file on your sdcard.   You can either copy it there across the usb, or push it via adb.

Once the file is on the device, via a terminal on the device, or adb shell, make sure you are root and execute the script:

    sh triangleaway_rev1.sh

let me know of any issues!

Thanks to JohnnyGalto on XDA for his original script and helping to test this.

    mccabet

EDIT:  On some appeals, the dd command did not like the conv=notrunc parameter.  I have revoved this parameter and it still functions as intended.  Please feel free to try it again.   The same warnings apply to this version as the previous version.  The previous version is removed and replaced with a new version.

EDIT2:  It is confirmed that ChainFire's  TriangleAway 2.90 does work on the Appeal.  It is much easier to use than my process.   Feel free to report results on either method used here.

I tried an older version of chainfires app and it did not work on my phone.   On the XDA, I was chatting with a member JohnnyGalto about the triangle.  It was his original triangle away script that was the base of my investigation.  I cleaned it up and made it work on the Discover and Appeal phones.  It should work on any phone that is similar, but I ony tested it on the Discover and Appeal.

I know what you are going through when you do something bad.  My appeal needs a stock kernel to fix wifi ( driver error) and I am getting forced closes on the google uploads app.  I experimented on building several kernels before we had a working cwm and I lost the original.  The stock app you made does not fix the problem.  I need to look into it further when time permits.

My next goal is to find the unlock code.  I have images of before and after an unlock.  I just need the time.

I think triangle away 2.90 might work... it works on the ace plus (its in the supported list) but I don't know enough about bootloaders and such to know that it will work for sure, and given my cwm blunder I'm a bit hasty to risk it... if I knew that I would definitely still have odin, I would adb pull all the partitions so I could restore the bootloader just in case I F my phone up.

my backup should have fixed your wifi issue, not sure why it wouldn't have, my wifi works fine. If my wifi got jacked up i'd be up the creek without a paddle, I use my phone as a wifi softphone via google voice (texting) with GrooveIP for calls... I wish I knew more about the in depth stuff, kernels and such are completely foreign to me.

I'm going to have to try it when I get a chance.

Odin will always be present as long as you limit your tinkering to the partition 8 and above.  I'm not sure of the boot process of the cpu, but most have a minimal boot that can let you recover.  However, the manufacturer likes to make access to it near impossible.

The wifi issue comes from me experimenting with my own kernels.  I loaded built versions of  kernel built from source as well as a Discover kernel ( messed up my screen and touch ), had to make a custom kernel to fix that.  I think I may have a driver missing, incorrect, or messed up the parameters in the wifi by using the wrong driver.  It is on my todo list.

I'm no expert in the kernel either.  I'm just learning by experimentation.  I have several phones so if I break one, it is just another goal to fix it.

By the way, you see they released another OTA update for the appeal?  The wifes phone got it.   Can't tell what changed and Samsung did not release updated source, but the version changed.

Are you referring to my script not working?  What is a "Centura"?  I never heard of it.

Can you send me a dump of mmcblk0p1?  Preferably before you applied the script?   And if possible, after?

    Thanks

centura is more or less ST's discover... its also a trebon board which the appeal is based off of, it's running ICS without carrier or OEM overlays, or so the ST website description says, they also use the phrase experience "pure" ics, so they imply that it is unmolested AOSP code... we think it may be a promising base for ics on the appeal.

i understand how you lost wifi, but restoring my stock rooted backup on your appeal should have fixed the wifi, i just dont understand why it didnt, it's my understanding that a backup backs up everything and thus restores everything, well at least from "boot" partition up and as i understand it the kernel is part of the boot img and the modules/drivers are built into the kernel, i could just have a misaligned understanding of things though too lol

and i dont know squat about updates, i use mine on wifi as a softphone without a sim card and i uninstalled the att update software because it nags the crap out of me with my ROM installed, something i have to fix in the next version... apparently there's at least 3 different versions floating around for the appeal, mine is uclc6, motorhead's is something different and i think maddog321 posted his up in a thread here somewhere and his was something else as well.  unfortunately you cant get software updates for this phone anywhere but ATT

sch-S738c... I tried downloading it but just got file not found error... although it could have just been my computer being wonky at the time... they have it listed and linked so there's no reason it shouldn't download.

Here's the samsung page for the phone, its cdma Straight Talk, runs on verizon towers, and its only $100 from ST.

And your triangleaway script didn't work for me on my appeal... I ran it from terminal emulator on phone

    First tried

#sh triangleaway.sh and it said cannot open triangleaway.sh

So I ran again and directed it to the sdcard

    #sh /mnt/sdcard/triangleaway.sh

    and it output

    conv option disabled
    conv option disabled
    conv option disabled

I shutdown and went into download mode, still says 30 counts, and when I reboot triangle is still there.

I'll try an get the sources.  Being it is a Verizon CDMA phone on ICS, there is no telling what the partition structure.  If I can get partition dumps ( all would be nice ), primarily of mmcblk0p1, I'll check into it further.

I removed the previous version and replaced it with a new version that does not use the conv=notrunc parameter on the dd commands.

I can not explain the differences, but the dd that was on my phone supported the conv= parameter.  After I reset my phone using the mmcblk0p1 you provided, I was able to reproduce the error.

It may have something to do with the adbd the stock (samsung's, I think) is more restrictive and that is what prevented some commands from workin properly to begin with... motorhead could explain in more detail, he mentioned it to me(and on the forum) when he got his appeal, he replaced the stock adbd with one built from cm7 and it broke the locks that caused us so much grief in the beginning.

I finally got the source for the centura.  It is based on the amaze platform, same as the Discover SGH-730M/G.  The 730 Discovers are similar and I have loaded the kernel into my appeal and it does boot, but the display and touch configurations are different from the Appeal.

Here is a cloud link to a triangleaway dump .zip for the Samsung Galaxy Proclaim s720c You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login I submitted it to Chainfire, but it sounds like he might not be supporting new devices anymore possibly :-( also have the .apk if needed. Make some magic happen!

I think I found the area the flags are stored, but some questions first, as the location is not the same as in the appeal.

    1)  How did you get the partition image?  What command did you use?  The reason I ask is the file seems a bit large compared to the Appeal.

    2) If you go into download mode, how many custom roms does it say you downloaded?

    3)  Do you have any images that was made before or after setting the custom flag.  This is to locate any changing areas to pinpoint the bytes that change.  If you are up to it, load another custom image via odin and take a another dump of the partition.

Please note that if I provide the steps needed to clear the triangle, I am not responsible for any damage to your device.  If you brick the phone, then it is your problem, not mine.  As always, make sure you have a copy of that partition before any modifications.

Don't know what happened to the text that was supposed to be here, so here we go again...

This is a script that will attempt to clear the custom flag and counts.  USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!!  I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR BRICKING YOUR PHONE!!!

I suggest trying the latest triangleaway from chainfire first.  I have  no way to test it as I don't have the phone.

    Don't forget a backup.

      Deeper down the rabbit hole!!!!
Chainfire isn't making any new versions of triangle away, but he may still add new devices to the supported list so people know that it has been tested and working on their phone... all it takes is a brave soul to try it and find out... I just decided to go balls to the wall and download it and run it on my appeal and it worked, no issues, no brick... nice and smooth...

I tried mccabet's build on my appeal but it didn't work for me and coincidentally mccabet convinced me to take a chance on chainfire's triangle away 2.90, not that I recommend anybody else do the same unless you are ok with premanently bricking your phone, because it IS a very real possibility... I was on a super high at the time because I accomplished something I wanted to do with my appeal since I got it.

Sorry I'm late to the party guys  ;D. Anyways:

mccabet- I did manage to build a working kernel from the Appeal source. At first I used my preferred Code Sourcery toolchain, which died on boot like you noted. So I switched to Google's 4.6 toolchain and it fired right up.

The WiFi is an Atheros chip, meaning we need the proper Atheros kernel drivers to build a working module. To get around this, you can mach the original localversion on the new kernel and fool the drivers into working. I'm working on assembling a functional module for WiFi.

As for adbd, if you disassemble the 5.0.2.8 recovery, a proper adbd can be had ;).

Motorhead,  I was able to build the kernel to work also except for the wifi.  I just never got around to figuring out what it was.  I am looking at porting the Samsung Discover SGH-S730M code.  I think it will work with the screen, touch and keyboard changes.  The problem with Samsung source is even though they are similar, they started with the same code and went through different branches for each model.

If you compare the 730S and M model code, the code is similar with the exception most of the #defines are in the same spots, but different names.
