i flashed away the recovery first bc i didnt know what i was doing, and then i flashed away the os by odin flashing sg7500 files thinking it would work, and now the phone works and turns on and all the non display related functions work, but it wont show anything on the display and it shows a ghost like white thing and a samsung logo with an exclamation point under it

I'm working on the CWM but it doesn't want to cooperate just yet.

This would be easier if I just bought one of these...

I have a friend with a perfectly new stock recovery stock os galaxy appeal, so what would I have to do to pull the Odin files off it?

I was fiddling around with my friends galaxy appeal and I came across a menu option in legal information in the about section that was called open source licenses, and in the licenses, if I'm not mistaken, it listed the entire core filesystem and the files needed for it to work, can anyone build a stock Odin ROM with the help of the discovery I made for the galaxy appeal?

First, your friend needs to root his/her device then clone the system and recovery.

On first post scroll down to where it says latest file... DO NOT flash the recovery img that's there or appeal_root.zip at the top... the recovery isn't right yet, and the appeal_root.zip is not the one you want.

What is the problem with the recovery posted?  I have built a few kernels for the Appeal.  I have used the Galaxy Ace Plus (S7500) recovery and kernel with the loss of display and touchscreen is inverted.

If you can share the source for your recovery, I'll see what I can do to test it and help solve any problems.

I am also looking for a raw dump of the partition mmcblk0p8 to get the boot.img so I can build a recovery load via odin.

    Thanks

      Deeper down the rabbit hole!!!!
the posted recovery along with the other almost 15 or so that Motorhead built all hang at the samsung splash screen and dont go any further... once booting into recovery mode i have let it sit for several hours and it stays hung at the samsung splash... all the results of testing are in this forum and the experimental forum with the exception of about half of the tests which all got the same result... odin logs(comment box) are there as well... almost all attempts to pull files/partitions are posted as well... when trying to pull boot partition and recovery partition we have run into wall after wall, the commands go through as if they are working but once i check my sd card the files arent there... but thats with the ace plus recovery that i flashed it is posted in this forum somewhere... i could upload it to my google drive if you wanna take a look at it along with the cwm builds motorhead has built that i have tested... if you read through all the forum posts in this thread and the experimental thread that will give you all the background on what we have found... just let me know what you need and how to get it i will do what i can... only thing i have modified is the recovery... i have ace plus cwm flashed to it.

i'm extremely noob but learning... i do have some prior experience with ubuntu linux but that was limited to installs and running basic stuff, no real development experience and i'm super rusty now lol, i've been doing everything under the guidance of either Motorhead or DroidHost and i try to post as much detail as possible with the results of whatever happens since i have the phone in hand and they are going by my feedback

Well, I've built my own software for my captivates and galaxy nexus.

I'll look at what you have.  If you can tell me where you got your source and how it was built, I can take a stab at building it myself.

The sdcard is not mounted automatically on my CWM version for the Ace.
I used this command to mount it:  mount -t vfat /dev/block/mmcblk0p23 /sdcard

    do the command: cat /dev/block/mmcblk0p8 > /sdcard/mmcblk0p8.img

that should copy the boot image to the sdcard.  then use "adb pull /sdcard/mmcblk0p8.img" to pull it off the sdcard.

I've been using the CM9 source to build, with a modified trebon (Ace+) device tree. Also, using dd may be a more complete way of pulling blocks, over cat (faster too I would imagine).

Is this your github?  You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

This is what I am building as a base to get where I am now.

I agree with dd vs cat.  the syntax for cat is a bit easier.  Only have to remember to redirect the output to a file ;^)

For all intents, the end result is the same.

That is indeed my github :). That is buildable, but like kRaZy has said, I haven't managef a boot yet. Have at it though :].

Cool,  I have been able to build the kernel also and get it to boot.  The issue with it is the display and touchscreen are wrong for the Appeal.  I have built using the geim default config and it made the screen display properly but the touchscreen has an issue.  That is where I quit last pending my laptop repairs.  I got it back today and will resume tonight.

I have also been able to rebuild the Samsung released kernel source as provided, and then using your initramfs and scripts created a odin load.

The problem I have run into is I am getting are a major error after the phone runs for a while.  It ultimately ends in the arm9 ramdump mode with a smem_0cil_tmp.c line=0.  It is related to rmod with varying PIDs.   I think this may be related possible to a bad module in the build.

With no serial console into the kernel, debugging is tough.  I have the serial debug via the USB capability, but it is not printing any data.

Lately, I have been trying to get a stock kernel to restore my Appeal to see if the ramdump error goes away.

      Deeper down the rabbit hole!!!!
That's where we're at lol...trying to get/build a working root or cwm to dump the stock ROM... Until we can at least get that much I'm not flashing anything but recovery so we have my phones stock ROM to fall back on, if it bricks, it bricks but I wanna try to keep it going so we can continue on with the project, I wouldn't be at any serious loss if it bricks as I got the phone for free and I only use it as a wifi soft phone and I have my LG Q for that purpose as well... I'm gonna go try to pull the partitions now and I will upload the cwm i'm using and if I manage to get the partitions them as well, all to my google drive and I'll post the link on the phone thread, not the experimental, I wanna try to keep that thread clean for testing and results only... All development and other Appeal talk should be relegated to the phone thread.

OK,  I'll keep everything here until we get something working.

Did you have any luck getting the partition dumps?

    My goals are:
    1) get a odin load that I can use to restore a phone to "stock". ( As close as we can get )
    2) get a kernel load that gives us root without crashing.

once we get those two goals, i think we should have enough capabilities to build a cwm recovery and then a cm load.

BTW, I tried to load a kernel I built using the Samsung Kernel source for the new Discover.  It is ICS and it just bootlooped.  It is close to the same device as the appeal without the keyboard.

Thanks for the boot.img.  It fixed the reboot issue I was having with all the stuff I built rebooting with a kernel panic.   Now I got a new problem.  In my experimenting, I tried to load the new Galaxy Discover kernel I built and got a bootloop.  Not sure if it caused my problem, but the touch screen is flipped and inverted.

Now we need to get into a webchat to discuss what we are doing so we don't have duplication.  Motorhead appears to be the most experienced ..  correct me if I am wrong.  I can successfully build the source, but the steps to build a rooted kernel from the source is eluding me.  I can modify the directors to make them R/W, but still get permission denied when I try su.
