So, last night I was able to install WakdOut! on my Ace Q.  It was very easy & all went smoothly. However, & apparently from some on-line searching, some people( with various phones) have this battery drain issue of fast discharging even while powered off!  I found I had this problem as well. (before the WakdOut! install)

So, the solution was to set the mobile network mode to GSM only. Take out the sim, power up/power down/ re-insert the sim (must somehow reset the sim?) and ta da~  no more battery drain.  I was able to get several days use of it.

Now, after installing WakdOut!, I noticed there was only one setting in Network modes: UMTS.  Ok, so don't panic, I thought.  Go to bed & see what happens in the morning.  Sadly, I woke up to  a 9% battery overnight--down from the 76% the night before! (with the phone powered off)
Good thing I had the recovery file.  I've now had to go back to the stock ROM.  >:(

I don't know why this is so. Perhaps it depends on what sim yer using?  At any rate, it looks like I won't be able to use any custom ROM that does not include a Network mode setting for GSM only.  The battery drain issue is so bad, it renders the phone nearly useless.  It'll drain down to zero in under 8 hrs, even while powered off!  Very strange for any device to behave this way, but there was a solution that hopefully, will still work after all the playing around I've been doing, lol.

      Deeper down the rabbit hole!!!!
that's something i'll have to look into...  i dont use mine on carrier service so i'm not sure how that works, but i believe network options can be locked in the sim... are you using the same sim card before and after you installed WaKd OuT! ROM? the battery drain on the appeal is a relatively new issue that just started being reported, i havent had issues with a sim card in mine causing battery drain, but i dont have an active sim and my appeal is on an older baseband that hasnt been reported with the battery drain issue as of yet.

ok I'm not sure how you were setting your network mode to GSM only but try this in WaKd OuT! ROM...

dial *#*#4636#*#* as if you were calling somebody, no need to hit send it will automatically bring up the menu that will bring up testing mode menu

    then Tap on phone information

Then scroll down to set preferred network type and change it to GSM Only

I have done this on my Appeal with NO SIM card in it and the option is there so it's not an issue with my rom.

Of course follow the rest of the procedure as well but that should help you with setting the network type to GSM Only, let me know how you make out, hopefully this will help you out so you can enjoy the benefits of WaKd OuT! ROM AND still use your cell service lol

Interesting.  Before I bought the phone, I did a fair amount of research on it & likely competitors. It seems that quite a few people were complaining about the battery drain issue. The one I have is a refurb from Ebay.  It looked to be the best bang for the buck on that type of phone.  I haven't had a cell phone in a few years & was wanting something cheap for emergency purposes on the road. Plus I liked the slide out qwerty for texting. I can't seem to get the hang of the touch screen, lol. Figured I'd get a smart phone because the Wi fi might come in handy sometimes.

I was a bit worried about the battery issue, but when I got the phone, I was getting a few days without the sim. After I got the sim, it started acting up. I didn't at first make the connection, but after 2 days of on- line searching for the answer, I found a solution that is working. I think you are correct that this particular sim is locked to a certain mode, & your phone needs to be on that setting.
What I don't get, is why the battery would drain, even with the power off?  Weird, but with the setting on GSM only, it doesn't happen.
I hope this might help anyone else out there having battery issues. Apparently, it's not just this phone that does this. I'd post the link where I found the fix, but it's now lost in cyber space somewhere.
I'm guessing this would mostly be a pre-paid issue.  You'd be able to get support from a carrier phone.  I've never heard of anyone anywhere having this issue except for me!   :o

Shoot!.... I didn't see this post before I made the other one.  The GSM only setting is under Network mode via Wireless & Networks/Mobile Networks.
I'll have to do another install of WaKd Out! as I didn't make a backup for it.  I'll have to try this later. If I can get the GSM setting, I should be all set-- I'll let you know,  Thanks for the input!

Yeah without a sim card in, you can't access mobile networks menu lol so I had to use hidden menu, definitely post back here if it works for you to fix the battery drain issue, right under the preferred network type dropdown box is a button to turn off the radio, you can use that to turn the radio off, then back on without rebooting the phone.

You may also want to try setting it to GSM Auto (PRL) that might help you out too.

Well, here's how I made out, lol.  Interestingly, I do remember that code.  Seems it was the first way I found how to set GSM only.  I can also get to it via settings/wireless & network/mobile networks/Network mode, ON THE ACE Q.

So, I reinstalled WaKd Out!.  Did the dial thingy, & sure enough, there were several settings, of which GSM only was available.  Unfortunately, it would not keep that setting.  Every time I'd hit the back button and re-click phone information, it would default to GSM/CDMA auto.  So, I rebooted up the Wakd Out!, went to settings, and, there was NO network mode setting showing up at all!  Yesterday, it would display 'Network mode: UMTS'

Somehow the Appeal format is slightly different than the Ace Q.  Just different enough so my Petro Canada Mobility sim card will not function correctly on it!  Your rom seemed to be much better than the Tellus rom that was on there.  Seemed to me that the net effect of installing Wakd Out! on the Ace Q, was to change the Ace Q into the Appeal.  I ended up with all kinds of AT& T things, like top ups, updates etc.

But, there was NO way to secure the GSM only setting.  The settings on WaKd Out! don't have a 'network mode' window that allows you to change anything, & the phone code DOES have various settings, but simply will NOT hold the 'GSM only' setting.
I did this time make a backup so if you manage to come up with another solution, I won't have to re-install it!
Lol.... hope this is keeping you entertained!  One good thing tho.....I'm getting really proficient at backups/restore & installing roms! ;)

P.S.  I did the phone code dial up when I restored back to the Tellus Stock rom,  & it displayed 'GSM only'.   Much different than when I did the same thing on WaKd Out!

Oh ya..... something else I noticed that was tad different.  When adding shortcuts to the home screen, on the stock rom, I could add the 'setting's shortcut.  On WaKd Out!, it wouldn't let me add the settings shortcut, but would open settings, & allow me to choose which setting I wanted to shortcut.  No biggie, but thought youd wanna know that.  Didn't do much else on account that battery draining like a leaky faucet!

      Deeper down the rabbit hole!!!!
Did you try the button underneath the network type dropdown after you set it to GSM Only to turn off radio, then turn it back on, instead of rebooting the phone? Or try one of the network modes with Auto (PRL) at the end? Either GSM Only Auto (PRL) or GSM/CDMA Auto (PRL)

The shortcuts setting is dependent on the launcher, I think. WaKd OuT! V1.0 has stock AOSP Gingerbread launcher which doesn't have a lot of options, I went with that to keep the ROM as light and clean as possible... try out Holo Launcher from the Play Store, there's a free version... if you want options, Holo has plenty.

Check with your carrier about APN settings as well, that might cause you issues... I'm thinking the battery drain is more than likely caused by the phone looking for signals that it can't find due to incorrect APN's since you're using it on a network that the phone wasn't technically intended for, unless your prepaid carrier is a Telus MVNO (basically a 3rd party carrier that buys "extra/unused" bandwidth from a major carrier to sell at a discounted rate, much like expedia.com or trivago sells hotel rooms and such and discounted rates because the hotel didn't book them up.)  Still worth looking into though. Major carriers often use different APN's for their own prepaid customers and MVNO's than what they use for their contract customers.

It seems that button underneath the configs doesn't seem to do anything in regards of changing how the phone connects. It seems the AT&T is hard-coded to only use UTMS for its network connection.  I checked out the Telus Stock out of curiosity, and it has 3 options.  WCDMA/GSM Auto, WCDMA only, and GSM only.  Also, even on the Telus stock, changing the setting from within the *#*#4636#*#* menu has no effect.  It has to be configured from the Network settings menu.

Edit: GSM-only seems to siginificantly increase the battery life, even when out of cell-service range.

I re -read this post and indeed, on the stock rom there is a Network Operators/ 'search networks' & 3 show up:
    Petro-Canada
    AT&T
    T-Mobile
If I search again, the AT&T doesn't show up.  I can also 'Automatically select operator' & when I do, it states I'm registered (with Petro Canada Mobility)
Petro Canada states that their sim card will work with any GSM phone. They won't support ANY phone with their sim that is not one of  the ones they sell.  So, buyer is at risk.
I've tried out all of your suggestions, nothing works.  It's the Petro sim card for sure & you've verified what others on line have stated that the sim is looking for signals, but when you've got the GSM only setting, it's all okay.
I just don't get why it drains when the power is off.

Would the holo launcher give me the GSM only setting on WaKd Out! ? I don't mind playing around with this a bit, but it's getting rather tedious going back & forth & resetting the sim etc etc...lol  :P

I'm starting to wonder now if somebody in Canada bought the Appeal, instead of the Ace Q, would they be having problems getting it to work properly in this country?  There must be a reason why the same phone would have 2 different names & apparently, are just a tad different in some ways?  I'm tempted to try out another sim card just to find out!

Yep...this explains why this sim won't work on WaKd Out! ( or maybe just any Appeal with stock rom?)

My battery life goes from just a few hours (even with phone power off) to several days.  That is fairly significant!

Yeah, I got my phone tweaked out with the Telus stock, using holo launcher, Along with AreaRom recovery (a VIP exclusive version of CWM 6.0.1.2), and a custom boot animation.  I have lost count of how many times I restored from a nandroid backup, because I screwed with something I shouldn't have, but it is a learning experience overall.

APN settings shouldnt be a support issue of their devices vs bringing your own from elsewhere... just ask them what their apn settings are or check their support website...  in fact i'll check into it and see what i can find

Here ya go!  right from the Petro-Canada site...  here are the APN settings you need... Petro operates on the Rogers wireless network.

I have a new Petro-Canada SIM card, and have added the Unlimited Browsing but it still doesn't work.
It is possible that your handset does not detect the correct settings to access our browser. Also, there are some handsets that do not work with our browser. Refer to the settings for the APN:

ROM will be built from the Telus Ace Q Stock Base :) for a multitude of reasons... one being the stock tethering doesnt seem to be carrier centric like it is on the appeal although i could possibly be wrong about that, i will know for sure when i restore my backup... there are several other reasons but it mainly boils down to Telus doesn't screw with as much as AT&T does... the Ace Q seems to be touched mostly by Samsung and I can remove most of that... i will be starting on a new WaKd OuT! build soon and then you can give it a shot and see what happens.

The answer right under my nose!  What a helpful person you are!  ;D  ...I should have delved a bit deeper, but it didn't seem to matter about the APN setting as far as the battery drain issue goes. I figured the Ace Q would have worked with Petro sim card because Samsung was on their list (along with it being a GSM phone), but I had to learn the hard way about the battery thingy..... A WaKd OuT! Telus Ace Q?   Can't wait!-- Dude, you rock!

wow! I apologize for not stressing enough the need for the correct APN in the PM , all data access is controlled by the APN settings . I have 6 or 7 APN set up for roaming and have to flip them manually .
Big battery drain happen when you don't have the right APN for the area you roam in cause the the phone constantly searching and trying to log in to a data port.

in the "phone test  menu"  after you set the  GSM auto (PRL)  and turning off/on the radio you have to hit the back key and exit back to the main test menu the back in for the settings to lock on , then ping to test if the setting are good for your carrier.

again my apologies, I got a new Nexus 7 and been ripping it apart so my attention is kind of devided ;D

Well, I don't know very much about all of this.  I only know that Petro Canada Mobility does not having any roaming & that when I set network mode to GSM only, all battery drain issues are gone.   For now, I'm good to go.  Phone is rooted, used Titanium to get rid of things I didn't want, battery lasts for days.  Don't know what else needs to be done at this point....it's just a phone!  lol :P
But I do very much appreciate all the great help I've received on this site.  Good bunch out here! :-*
