Author Topic: Centura on Screen Keyboard has No Voice input Icon

Topic Original "No modification"
In the keyboard settings on my Samsung Galaxy Centura there is a box that I have checked for Voice input - it says Show voice entry button on keyboard.   It IS checked but there is not voice input icon on the keyboard.   I have Wifi turned on and can use voice input with some programs as well as the Google search bar at the top of the home screen.   I find it really handy to have that voice input from the keyboard as it does work well but it's MIA - MISSING.

I'd swear I saw it at one time but it's missing form Messaging, browser field input, email and any other program I've tried today that needs text input from the onscreen keyboard.   Any idea how to get it to show up?

I do think I've got a program I used on one of my Moto Droids that added that function to the regular keyboard but if I remember it was a memory hog so I'd rather not use that.

No info found in the PDF manual for the phone on voice entry.

Why do I have the feeling this is another stupid simple solution I'm not finding ...     :-[

When you are in text messaging, browser or any app I've looked at there is no voice input  in the notification bar at top.  In the past (I'd swear the last couple days) I saw it as a small microphone symbol near the bottom of the keyboard in a gray box like all the other letters and numbers.   I've double checked all 'System settings' and I've got everything I can think of turned on that would allow voice input and have tried on and off  with everything.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'my keyboard'.   I have choice of Samsung keyboard which is grayed out as it has to be checked apparently and the addition of Google voice input which I have checked.  If I don't check Google voice input I cannot check the "Voice input" "Show voice entry button on keyboard" so I have those checked and according to that checkbox there should be a voice entry button on keyboard.   But there is not any voice entry on the keyboard or anywhere else on the screen when I have the keyboard up to input text.

I'm just using the stock keyboard and I just checked in again in the notification pulldown but there it's not there.   Pulldown only shows my battery program I added and the Dr.Web icon saying system is protected and 1 update available for another program.

I just looked at my Droid Bionic which has the same 4.0.4 ICS on it and it shows up on that keyboard between the space bar and the 123? to the left of it.

Where can I find the Blk keyboard that ufo8mymunky made?   Or does that require the ROM posted here?   I'll dig around here as I assume it's here but if you have a link handy that would be great.   Thanks for help.

Thanks for the info and all the help.   Unfortunately I don't have CWM or any of that setup/installed and would rather not flash something just for a keyboard issue at this time.   I downloaded it all the same in case I get to that point but I'm fairly sure I've got an app I can just install that will take care of this.   I was hoping to avoid even that as I said I swear it had that mic symbol at some point in the last few days (just got the phone Friday) and I was sure it's just a setting somewhere.   I've installed probably 20+ programs so I may need to look to make sure none of them has caused this.   Thanks again.

One other good thing came out of this - I just finally found the 'Thank You' button here  ;)

I found the voice kb app.   It's called Talk to me keyboard and all it does is add the microphone.   I installed it but unfortunately it seems this phone has the Samsung keyboard locked to it and it can't be unchecked.   Even though I check the Talktomekeyboard in the Input settings it does not show up (like it did on my Droids).   I'm trying to avoid a custom ROM right now and while I know that would take care of this minor annoyance I'm not going there yet.   I am hoping I can find a setting (I am rooted now) that would allow me to use the talktomekeyboard.   Maybe I can do some file renaming to swap out the Samsung keyboard for this one if I can find a file for it.   Not sure that's possible but I'll be looking.

 :o

I must be at a low point in my Biorhythm Intellectual cycle   ::)

I got the problem solved.   Pretty much as daddy366 said in his first reply.   The option to select the input is on the notification bar but only shows up there once the keyboard is up (thought for sure I tried that).   Now since I've got the TalkToMeKeyboard installed it's an option as well as just Google voice input.   If I choose the TalkToMeKeyboard then it has a button right in the keyboard with the microphone so you can just click it to input voice rather than having to pull down the notificiation bar to select voice input.   TalkToMeKeyboard is not as big as I thought so I'm keeping it as a primary keyboard as it makes input easier to jump back and forth between typing and talking.

Thanks again ... as you can see in my last post problem solved.   BTW I use Total Commander as a file explorer and more for the Android OS and have been using it on the PC for over a decade.   Free on the market and IMO one of the best utilities you can have for both PC and Andorids.

It's there, just hidden away...

Steps to put it back on the keyboard:

1 - Go to System Settings
2 - Go to Language & Input
3 - Make sure that both Google voice typing & Samsung keyboard are checked
4 - Go to Samsung keyboard settings
5 - Make sure voice input is checked
6 - Back to 'Home'
7 - Enter messaging app
8 - Start a new message (keyboard should pop up)
9 - On bottom line on keyboard to the left of the space bar, you should see 2 keys: the 123-Sym & Settings keys.  Press & hold the Settings key until the 2 choices come up.
10 - Select the microphone icon.  You can toggle between the two functions (Settings/Voice) in this manner.

That should fix your problem.  It did on my StraightTalk Samsung Centura.

Cheers

Just to let anyone having this same problem know, I found the microphone (after looking for probably 2 months and finding this post today!) On your "stock" keyboard, as long as you have all of the settings correct, if you hold down the settings key that is to the left of the space bar, it can change to the microphone key! This may save ypu some space on your phone!
