Centura Rom is absolutely wonderful. Faster, I think, than the original system, once you get BB in. Thanks daddy336 for all of the help. I have this baby set to "Beast" mode now, and I still get a full 24 hours with wifi on or gps on without a charge. Crazy, and Lord knows I am an app freak. I have a Kindle, but choose to read me books on my Centura. I have an iPod, but listen to my music on my Centura, I have a land-line, but I talk to all my women witrh my Centura. Why? Young Whipper Snapper! I prefer my tablet for eBooks. You just can't beat a 10 inch screen for less page turning and larger text.  ::) It doesn't help that I'm a Bi-Focal-ed old Fogey! LOL!

Hey, just wondering what you meant by "BB"

Also, very excited about this roms release. This will be my first android phone that I have rooted and flashed a rom to (just switched from my jailbroken iPhone 4). Just curious though if I should go a ahead and root using the method described on the forums or if a new method will be released with the rom?

P.S. What is a "jig" and why would that be necessary to remove the yellow "!" from the status bar? Or has that problem been resolved?

Normally, I encourage people to search, but since you're 100% new to android, I'll lay out some info for ya :).

The root method found here is so far the only one i know about (I don't generally look into things very often). And ROMs come pre-rooted from us, so I guess it would be "new"...

And a jig is used to force a Samsung into download mode. The yellow triangle in the status bar is something else. The one you see described shows up when a modified Samsung boots with a modified kernel image.

Thank you for the quick reply! I don't often post myself, more of a lurker really, but it's nice when I do post to get a response so quickly.

From the research I've done I've gathered that the root method described on this forum is one of two ways to obtain root on the Centura. The other being poot. But from what I understand it's not the most stable, and Area 51's method is much more efficient.

You say AreaROMs come prerooted? So I guess I should just wait until the public release of the Centura ROM to root my phone? I'm not in any big hurry so if I can save myself time and effort by just waiting, I'll do that.

I did a search on what exaclty a "jig" is and what I could come up with is pretty much what you said. A piece of hardware used to force your phone into download mode. Armed with that information I'm still confused as to what exactly this is talking about: "After you boot back up you will get a popup wanting you do update, click install and it will reboot your
phone into clockworkmode will give you a warning its not signed, make sure no is highlighted and hit the
power button, then power button again your phone will reboot and no more pesky popup. you will still get a yellow ! you can either get a jig for it or wait till the ROM is released." Quoted from daddy366's sticky post Centura Root.

The main question I had however is still unanswered. What is "BB" that talisman was referring to? I've tried searching for it but the only thing I can come up with is instructions on obtaining root on a Blackberry.

Thanks again for this great community, happy to be apart of it!

Apparently I'm not the only one out here having this issue with the Centura - compass apps do not work with this phone. They do nothing, or PLAY will say it's not compatible.  Will the new rom enable this, or is it even possible?  Thanks.  Looking forward to the custom rom anyway.

Rom should be released in about a week ,that's DH's call. As far as copmass goes if its not compatible dont see what else can be done unless a custom kernel will work. In order for a lot of new things to work a custom kernel will have to be built for it.
