my suggestions is you install cwm first then make a nandroid backup after you do that youll see a clockworkmod folder in your sdcard.
then flash the OC kernel+ ROM via CWM, itll have root oc kernel and the ROM for you.

    heres the link for cwm:

heres the link for the OC + ROM:

You need a scard every thing gos on that.make sure you have the drivers downloaded  for the phone  when you plug the phone in and its n windows should see the phone and install them for you...you dl cwm {odin} the tar file and a rom.open odin yup and click on the 30.7 exe file you will get a box with a bunch of blocks in it,put your phone in download mod, plug it in to the oc,uncheck the reboot box,you should have a blue box with a Comm # in it,click on the pda tab and you will get a new window find the tar file you download and dbl click on it,it will place tha tar file in the pda box, after that click start and wait for it to say pass in big letters. when thats done unplug the phone and boot it to recovery.once there go to backup/restore backup and make a backup...............when it finishes go bacl to reboot system and reboot.................plug the phone back in wait for the pc to find it when it does click on the phone [sch378c] and when that opens click on sdcard,,then clockworkmod....then backup........copy and paste the rom next to the folder thats in there............unplug the phone again and boot to recovery...go to install zip from sdcard...then choose zip from sdcard.............then backup...............then the rom..............scroll to it and hit the power button..then yes and hit power again.....when its installed go back to wipe data/factory reset and hit yes...........wait for it to finish when its done reboot the phone.....give it a few mins to boot .then sign in to google and your all set

I am having similar problems.   I originally decided to root my phone so I could try to fix an issue with my phone not sync-ing to my google account through ANY app.  Just keeps saying, "can't establish a reliable connection."  I found I could fix it if I root my phone.  Now I tried to use odin, but it's not finding my phone.  So I'm stuck on step 1, basically.    Any help would be amazing since I, as well, am pretty green at all this.

Thank you.  That's actually the method I've been trying to follow, but when I get my phone in Dowload Mode Odin isn't recognizing it.  I couldn't find any drivers to update on my phone, and when I tried using the latest version of Kies 3 it said my phone wasn't supported.  I'm really lost and frustrated.  I've spent days trying to resolve this issue.  Any help or tips are appreciated.

I used the link to download the drivers, but when following the installation wizard once it reaches the installation part it just freezes and never installs.  I've tried through a few different downlaods, they all seem to do the same thing.

the drivers could take a while to install..

if all your having  trouble with is syncing your google account..go to settings and make sure 3g is turned on and also wifi is on.....sounds like when you first signed up to google you checked the  to sync on wifi only.......that would be the only reason for sync not working..........

That is my first issue.  Where do I find the 3G settings to check if it's on?  If you mean "enable data" then this has been done.  My wifi is on also, and connected.  How can I check to see if I selected the "Wifi only" sync?  And since I'm connected thru wifi should that rule that out?

I will try letting the driver install go over night, 'cause I would like to be able to root my Centura.

sounds like every thing is on and right......only other thing it could be is your using the wrong e mail and or password that you used the first time...........try dialing *22890 and see what happens.......they may be having trouble with your service..........
