Author Topic: Tips and Tricks for the StraightTalk Galaxy SII (and some others!)

Topic Modified: 19/10/12 (08:59) AM
I will keep updating this as I come across things... but here are some helpfule Q&A's I have for everyone.

BOOTING INTO ODIN MODE: To boot into ODIN, hold the VOL+, VOL- and POWER buttons until the ODIN WARNING APPEARS.

1. How do I change the dock icons?
A. Click the "Applications" icon in the dock, then hit the menu button and select "Edit". Then you can drag whatever icon you like onto the dock.

2. How do I change the ringtone for text messaging?
A. By default, the ringtone for text messaging is not set to use the default notification tone... its set to some birds chirping. To change this, go into the Messaging app, then hit the menu button, then "settings". Scroll down to "Notification Settings" and press "Select Ringtone".

3. Where do I enable USB Debugging, Mock Locations and Unknown Sources?
A. UNKNOWN SOURCES - In settings, click on "Applications", There you will find the "Unknown Sources" checkbox.
A. USB DEBUGGING & MOCK LOCATIONS - In settings, click on "Applications", then "Development". There you will find the two checkboxes for USB Debugging and Allow Mock Locations.

4. What network is StraightTalk's Galaxy SII on?
A. AT&T (HSPA+). It seems to be a stock GSII with a StraightTalk SIM in it. It is branded with ST's graphics... and it appears to be locked... but calling StraightTalk about unlocking the phone not only proved fruitless, but they didn't even know what I was talking about when I asked for the unlock code.

5. Can I change the APN settings to remove the proxy?
A. No. The system is locked. However, unlike the proxy on other phones using their GSM SIM Cards, removing the proxy allows for some apps like Netflix to run better (if at all). All apps do work through the APN settings... though you may have to trick some of them. See "Running Netflix" below.

6. Will Netflix run on the Galaxy SII with the APN proxy?
A. Initially Netflix didn't work. When service was established, Netflix said it couldn't connect to the network, didn't even give me an option to login. However, I connected via WiFi and logged in, set it to remember my login information and then disconnected WiFi and it worked.

7. Will Flash work on the GSII?
A. Flash works out of the gate. It can also be updated to v11.

8. Do Flash apps work with the GSII?
A. Yes. Crackle for instance plays beautifully.

9. Are there any immediate must haves for the GSII?
A. I think you should install Chrome. The version that DroidHost has included with AR3.3 installs and works great!

10. Why can't I set GMAIL to not check every 15 minutes like I can with regular email? How can I make it stop notifying me every time I get a new email?
A. Open GMAIL and you will see a list of emails... from there, press the menu button, then select "Accounts". Now you will see your gmail account(s) in a list. From there, press the menu button again and select "Account Settings". Under "Manage Accounts", click on your gmail account (You can also get to this area from your sync menu in phone settings). You will now see everything your phone is syncing for your google account. Simply uncheck anything you don't want to sync and PRESTO, no more notifications.

11. How do I change the lock screen wallpaper?
A. In settings, select "Display", then "Screen Display". You will see a section for FONT, HOME SCREEN WALLPAPER and LOCK SCREEN WALLPAPER. It also have an option to select where you'd like the clock positioned.

More to come!

Chrome is incompatible with Gingerbread. You must be  running Android 4.0 or higher
