Their BYOD program stipulates a 3g phone, unfortunately that doesn't leave  too many good phones that will work:(

possibly...I know that SIM cards can be switched out between different ST phones and work. I've never had an unlocked GSM phone to try it with. I looked on eBay and found a lot of flashing kits for different phones which some were 4g but the price tag was a 100 bucks, there might be one for your friends phone.

To use a VzW phone on a GSM network it has to be a "World Phone", otherwise any AT&T/T-Mobile phone should work, sometimes even without unlocking it.

      Deeper down the rabbit hole!!!!
I'm pretty sure you can't flash a Verizon phone to AT&T... if you have a Verizon "world phone" it wouldn't even be necessary... the whole point of a world phone is they aren't locked to a single carrier if I'm not mistaken, so essentially they are factory unlocked...

i have read conflicting info on Verizon iPhones being used on AT&T and other gsm carriers because the GSM port is supposedly open, but I've read other threads that say otherwise...i have a friends Verizon iPhone 4 and I'm waiting on him to buy a new dock connector for it before i take it apart to find out if there is a Sim port in it and whether or not it can be used on ST they say no iPhones on byop but you used to be able to when they first started the AT&T byop plan, but they have to be jailbroken to change the APN settings

you may be able to flash something like a Sony Xperia Play from Verizon to AT&T i have one of each and have torn them apart the Sim slot is in the Verizon version, but i need to get a new flex cable to do any further testing on them.

oh T-mobile phones with T-mobile byop Sims from ST will get full t-mo 4g where its available... the AT&T Sims on AT&T phones used to but it doesn't specifically state that now, so i dunno if they still do... and chances are you won't be able to use a 4g lte Verizon phone with any ST sim... but there is a slight possibility with some vz 4g lte phones may work on gsm but its a crap shoot... apparently certain 4g lte bands  are the same as gsm bands so it would be a matter of checking the lte band your phone uses against the gsm bands ST byop uses.

obviously unlocking may also be involved in some of those possibilities but i don't know for sure or if any of it is even possible, just some tidbits I've come across while researching and/or repairing certain phones and trying to find out whether they can be used on ST, there's a lot of conflicting information out there, as if it wasn't already hard enough to research device options for ST byop lol

just some food for thought on the subject
