It's been rumored to be coming for some time and I'm not sure when it actually released but I saw the BYOP package at Walmart last night for the first time.

Apparently this will work with a Verizon phone (probably Sprint too but I'm not sure)  as long as it is NOT an Iphunk,  BlackBerry,  or a 4g LTE device.

So basically we are limited to the older FroYo and Gingerbread phones such as  the Facinate and Droid X, unless there is a newer custom rom available for said device.

Still,  more options are better than fewer options.

I'm my area Verizon's network is the only option for Straight Talk service so I can't say either way for Sprint's network/phones.

      Deeper down the rabbit hole!!!!
MOD EDIT: ST no longer offers CDMA BYOP, its not positive whether they will offer it again in the future, if this is a temporary program shutdown to fix a ton of ousts they were having or if its completely permanent... the lucky few who managed to port their Verizon phones to ST will, of course still have service, but if you were holding out to find the perfect phone to switch over, you are S.O.L.

CDMA BYOP is back up on the Straight Talk site, so it appears whatever issues they had have been worked out... although I haven't called to confirm it is, in fact, back online and ST is notorious for not having the most accurate or up to date web site.

This isn't true. My co-driver just activated a DROID X with straight talk a couple hours ago. Prior to that it was a Verizon phone used on page plus..

Actually,  they don't specify on the website as far as I have seen.  I wonder if it's possible to activate a US Cellular phone on the Verizon network via ST.  They use the same 3g frequencies.

If this were possible the available phone selection would be much better.  US cellular has some newer 3g only handsets available.

I just called customer service to find out for sure.  The CDMA BYOP program is for Verizon branded phones only.

Well, that's what one tech says, and we've dealt with their "information" before.

i tried fixing/editing the thread header to reflect that it was back up but i have had crap wifi connection on my phone and tapatalk was loading slow and crapping out on me, i can't tell you how many times i just shut off my phone due to frustration and lost whole posts... so thank you phydeux for fixing the header lol, i think it was phydeux anyway... neighbor moved his wireless gateway and i'm not gonna complain that my phone wont pick it up since he was nice enough to share... had to wipe the dust off my PC since this is the first time i've turned it on in probably a month or more

Wonder if I can get my LG Env 1st edition switched over to ST or net10.   I would love to have that phone back in my arsenal.  I have had it sitting on the shelf plugged in for the past 4 years.   It was my favorite non android phone.

The limiting thing on this paticular thread is the word "CDMA"

CDMA is not a thing that AT&T or T-Mobile uses.

And, in this particular case, so far as we know, it currently only applies to devices for the Verizon network.

Google is your friend on things like GSM and CDMA

Read alot, and learn..you will feel alot better about it
