Author Topic: Straight Talk Phone Recommendations

Topic Modified: 21/10/13 (07:03) PM
Ok hear is your chance to brag!

I currently use the Sprint Precedent. I bought it because it was cheap while I was battling some serious health problems. It is now time to pass it to my son and UPGRADE!

This time around it needs to be Verizon they have the best coverage where I am located.
A decent Camera
GPS
Storage Space, I use a lot of Apps and store lots of files and videos for work.
Decent sized screen but portable. If I wanted a freakin I pad I would buy one!
All day battery life
Durable would be nice my wife will be getting the same phone and she is hard on electronics. Um I mean the kids are hard on her electronics.
Finally it still needs to be somewhat affordable I am in the process of starting two business and funds are still somewhat limited. Thankfully they are both exploding which has been nice but no reason to go crazy.

Looked at the Nexus 7, Nice but is it a tablet or a phone? is there one particular your thinking of and I do not see it on the website so I am guessing I bring it in on the byop program.

For Quality And Durability? These are not gameboys..they are high tech gadgets. My advice?buy anything with ics or above.the hardware is like orifices.one size doesn't fit all.it is opinion.I prefer Samsung. HTC is a cross between iPhone hardware and android guts.I dislike them.huweai or however its pronounced..?cheep,cheep,cheep is what I say when I see it.

i believe it is on verizon they have 3 new ZTE phones out all running Android 4.1 the lowest end of them is available locally here, for 129.99 and is on verizon so i would think maybe all 3 are and since its CDMA 800/1900 its either verizon or sprint but i haven't seen alot of new Phones from Straight talk going on Sprint.

Well I am not familiar with the ZTE brand so I am going to only buy 1 majesty and see how it goes.

The Precedent now that I have spent some time playing with it and killing every background service not needed works pretty decent for what it is and should make a nice phone/mp3 player for my 14 year old.

I will update after I have had some time to play with it!

I had a ZTE Merit for about a week when I dropped it and the LCD part of it shattered. Aside from that it was an okay phone for the price. Ended up replacing it with the LG optimus zip which handled my abuse better but internal memory was pitiful lol. Now I have an LG optimus Showtime (which ST no longer sells).

Also, be careful with the USB ports, the one on my Merit broke in 6 months.

Too bad you need Verizon otherwise I'd say pick up a second hand Rugby (Smart or Pro). Easily some of the toughest I've seen.

Rugby, baby, yeah! Makes me randy, lol yeah, if you could do AT&T and BYOP your options would be opened wider than a cheerleaders legs at the big game(referring to the hyped up jumping split you pervs, now get your head out of the gutter lol)...

Check out Green Cells www.usedcellphoneshop.com/ they have great deals on used phones, but their selection is ever changing as it's a trade-in/reused based site... they also do trade-in discounts and recycling, coupon codes can be found online and they offer repeat customer discounts I think also, and a warranty, can't remember if its 30, 60, or 90 days though.

Samsung Galaxy Express is also a great pick if you find one used, a friend of mine picked one up from Green Cells in like new condition for $115 with a coupon code, you get 4g LTE service on it with ST's AT&T BYOP sim(where available when on AT&T's network)... 1.2GHz dual core, like 689 or more available RAM I can't remember exactly, I just glanced over the storage and RAM on it when he got it. (I would assume it's 1GB before the OS sucks some up) just under 5GB available storage, I wouldn't exactly call it break proof, but I'm sure you could otterbox it and that would be just as good... they are like $250 brand new, it's an ATT Go!Phone and runs 4.1.2 Jelly Bean... it's the second phone he bought from Green Cells with no issues.

or you could get yourself a Google Nexus 4, which, I believe is only like $230 new from google play store(on pc) and is completely bloat free and not carrier locked since it is a native Nexus.

Now if you go with Net10 they have a much bigger selection of phones than their StraightTalk sister and it might be worth it since you are gonna have multiple phones, Net10 offers family plan prepaid...

So, inshort I wouldn't necessarily recommend any StraightTalk phone as long as there is BYOP lol, you can generally get more phone for your money on the used market... but ST is getting better phones in now from what I can tell so that may not necessarily hold true now.

Well, its not bad. Kind of cheap feeling so I am a little worried but we will see how it goes. Not seeing much in the way of root and roms available but eventually I suspect something might come around.

Internet on the 3g is anemic but functional have a lot of work to do this week so I am hoping in a week or two I will have time to play.

AT&T is pretty good in town but as soon as I travel it looses to Verizon and I hope to be doing more traveling this year since my health has improved. Otherwise I would have considered it. Last trip I took the Sprint phone lost coverage just outside of town and never came back until I returned to town. Not acceptable! My brother with Verizon had coverage almost the entire time lost it in between hills was all.

My opinion?avoid straight talk.poor signal, poor customer service poor devices they piggyback on other carriers towers.they do not have cell towers of their own.they also fib about the unlimited data part of their plans.you get the first gig at whatever speed you have on your device 3g,4g,whatever.after that its capped.go with Verizon.they are by far the largest in the states with the best coverage.

There are a few things you should ask yourself:
  • What's the best coverage where I'll be using the phone the most? (AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, or Sprint)
  • Do they provide 3G/4G/LTE where you plan to use it? Or just 2G or lower?
  • Check out the plans/providers for the system that covers your needs the best
  • Do they have a BYOP (Bring Your Own Phone) plan? Does it have to be a phone from their network? (Verizon, Sprint are YES. AT&T, T-Mobile, no.Must be unlocked, tho, if using a different network)
  • Does this network have MVNO's that I can get the same network cheaper? (Ex:AT&T has H2O, T-Mobile has Walmart's Family Mobile)
With all this in mind, THEN go looking for a phone. Match what you know to what is out there. You'll find deals all over.
I've been doing the MVNO shuffle for awhile. Cheapest rates&coverage around here is T-Mobile, BUT their fastest data spedd within 50+ miles is LESS THAN 2G!. So, they're #2, if needed. AT&T here has almost same coverage, but data at 4G (HSPDA+, or fake 4G) available here at my house. Sprint/Verizon has REAL spotty coverage here. Might get 4 bars in the house, walk to the porch, and have no signal at all)

In the end, I chose AT&T/AT&T MVNOs. And StraightTalk, for me, has been fine. I get my 4G speeds, 2.5GB data (NOT 1GB. Unless you're streaming music or videos, then they'll throttle you 'early'), greta voice and sms, and a good price.

You have to do some homework before you buy a phone. Match the network to your needs, then the phone to the network.
