443,000 people die prematurely from smoking or exposure to secondhand smoke, and another 8.6 million live with a serious illness caused by smoking.

Alcohol abuse kills some 75,000 Americans each year and shortens the lives of these people by an average of 30 years, a U.S. government study suggested

Each year, poor diet and physical inactivity kills 365,000 Americans, according to drugwarfacts.org. That's 1,000 per day.

In 2002, 43,005 people died in traffic accidents. Seat belt data was available for 32,598 of those involved in fatal car crashes. Of that number, 19,103 were not wearing seat belts. (Little more than half)

Pigs are allowed to pull people over and issue them tickets which require them to pay or risk jail time and your license because when not wearing a seat belt they are more likely to die or be seriously injured in a car accident.

If that is truly the case then why aren't they taking action to discourage people from drinking, smoking, gluttony, (besides ineffective commercials about smoking) when these things individually kill more people yearly than not wearing a seat belt?

Because they make money off these things. when people buy food, cigarettes, beer they pay a sales tax. so if the state were to try any method to discourage people from doing these things they would lose money.

wearing a seat belt should be a personal choice because the only life at risk is your own, but it never will be because the state "cares" too much to allow you to die in a car accident.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy cigarettes and alcohol but seat belt laws are bs.

I'm not disagreeing, but if a person makes a conscious decision to drive without a seat belt knowing the risk they shouldn't have to pay. They aren't endangering anyone but themselves.

Some times thats the only way to get people to see things ....and it goes to pay the Officers that gave you the ticket to start with.......

As with most States if not all Taxes are not enough to pay the salaries for there service as well as all services we use

I was a Volunteer Firefighter and Licensed EMT use to work the stations Ambulance and I wont go into it either but seat belts do save lives

but i also have to agree with 000000 as I am a bigger guy and the seat belt is just totally uncomfortable in the mountaineer its so restricting that if you try to move to adjust controls you have to be a contortionist to be able to I would like to have the "CHOICE" whether i wear a seatbelt or not.

I too think it should be a matter of personal choice as to whether to wear a seatbelt or not. I think it all boils down to the costs involved in accident cleanup. I'm sure it costs the state/county/whatever more money to handle an accident with either life threatening injuries or fatalites than it does one with none to moderate injuries.

Obama care + seat belt laws = lower costs due to less hanious car accidents on average.

Now some of us poor people live in a state like florida that did not extend medicare, so an unemployed person pays 300 a month for the cheapest insurance. No help.

So, seatbelt laws that affect everyone now helps those premiums we pay to be lower, at least in theory.

But who cares, arnt we all getting busy on dying anyways, lolz
