In the app 'ram manager' there is an option called 'file swap' which from what I can tell supplements or adds to your system ram with your SD or internal storage. I added 512mb with the file swap option and it gives me great performance but it warns me that it might reduce the life of my SD card.

What is the chance that it will reduce the life of my SD card, and if so by how much? Because so far this file swap option seems to be working great performance wise and unless it greatly reduces the life of my internal/SD card I think this option is well worth it.

    Cheers

That's the 'generic response', true, but semi-misleading. True, in it's own way, but missing a few points.

'swap' writes a portion of memory to storage, so the OS 'thinks' it has more memory than it actually has. DEPENDING ON WHAT IS SWAPPED IN/OUT OF THIS 'SWAP SPACE', HOW MUCH, AND HOW OFTEN is what 'shortens' the life of an sdcard.

A sdcard has a limited number of writes 'buitin' to it. For an example (but I have no clue on your sdcard what the number REALLY is), let's say 10,000. This means you can, theoretically, write the same 'cell' (part of the memory of the sdcard) 10,000 times before it will fail. Approximately. Using swap makes reads/writes to the sdcard increase. How MUCH it increases, and shortens the life of the sdcard, depends on all the factors listed above.

A better question to ask is "Will using swap dramatically decrease the life of my sdcard?"

The short answer, no. The sdcard will more likely fail during the lifetime of the phone because of an accidental static shock, the phone itself going bonkers and frying it, or you accidently shooting it out of that tiny, spring-loaded slot at the dog, and him eating it, than swap 'killing' the card.

I bought an sdcard during Sandy, used it extensively in my old G1, and then my Avail, with swap running, for years. I still use the same card in my Exhibit, without swap. No issues at all.

As cheap as a multi-gigabyte sdcard is now, I really wouldn't worry about it. If the speed-up is worth the possible risk of 'losing' the sdcard, go for it.

But swap does shorten the life. Not by much, not dramatically, but it does. It might 'die' a month earlier than what it 'normally' would over the lifetime of the card. You have to weigh the risks/benefits, and decide.

Does anyone have detailed instruction on which file swap app is easiest
to use and how to do it? I have a 32gb chip and I really need the extra ram room for this centura. Im using team centura's rom and kernel...Thanks.
