froyo is worse then GB and yes you can use the GB one as all precedents start with froyo just DL the 2.0 rom and the 2.1 update flash 2.0 via the instructions then move on to 2.1 also via the instructions =) trust me you wont be dissapointed!!!

I have a question I haven't found addressed yet. I have the precedent sch-m828c straight talk phone. I tried to update the firmware from froyo 2.2 to 2.3 (is that GB?) Reason I got to wanting the update discos I have archos 32 tablet that I just updated and I love the improvements----namely the ability to run flash. So naively and ignorantly I emailed straight talk tech support and asked why it knocked my wi-fi off when I tried to run firmware update. Didn't really expect a response but within an hour they called me and verified the info in my email then told me they didn't allow updating firmware because people were rooting phones and they were not allowing that. I was trying to understand his foreign accent  but was not pleased that I wasn't allowed even one update.

So my question is can straight talk tell if I root my phone . ...don't plan on doing thetethering or hotspot thing.  Just want to get rid of preinstalled apps n gain memory. Am concerned that they might cut off service and the legality of rooting.

Sup...Katt.. Well as far as i know they can not tell unless you 1. tell them.(Don't Do that LoL ..) 2. send in your phone for repair or  because you bricked it. Ect Ect Ect . And once you Root your Phone you void the warranty anyways so.... wouldn't worry to much about that..Plus if Straight Talk ever finds out i Rooted, and using a Rom that's not there's etc. , some how thru the magic of Loging into my phone via some super big Brother System...I SAY LAWSUIT that's got to be a very big invasion of personal information. Not to mention privacy violations. And Rooting your Phone is your Deal..Its Not against the law. Its your phone. your personal private property,Not Straight Talks. Yea S.T will tell you they do not Condone Rooting and they do not Allow it But look at it this way...ITS YOURS...That would be like me telling you that you cant Drive your Brand New car that you paid for (Not Me) on the Freeway but can drive it around the Block Every other Wednesday  and twice on Sundays..

...If i am Wrong, I Sorry But i still Believe in Whats Mine is Mine U cant tell Me How or When  to Use MY PROPERTY.....

    Sorry for the Rant....

They are both correct, on this matter, as far as rooting goes they have no way to know, unless you do something as stated previously, ie. Tell them, send in phone for repairs, ect, i wouldn't worry about it, i have had my phone rooted since the day i got it, and no issues other than they sent me a voice mail telling me they were gonna terminate my service if my 3g usage didn't drop down, but then again i was using between 7 - 10 gigs a month as i was using it for tethering,
