I have an LGL38C, but it is not signed up to be used with any carrier. I want to use this device to record conversations. I have this:

If I plug the 3.5mm end into the phone and the RED RCA plug into a set top box, it records audio directly from the set top box. But if use an adapter to connect it to a 3.5mm microphone or a 3.5mm female output device, I cannot get it to record reliably. Sometimes it records from that source, other times it ignores the 3.5mm cable and just records from built-in mic. How to handle this?
