I rebooted my L34C to try out a new boot animation file.  It didn't work, which I would have expected if I had compared its contents to the existing bootanimation.zip, because their structures were too dissimilar.  But I didn't.

It booted, apparently normally, with the conspicuous absence of any boot animation, but with the WiFi switched off.  And it refuses to switch back on, regardless which switch I use.  The various switches appear initially to turn on, but when I close that window and immediately reopen it, it already has switched itself off.

The WiFi icon never appears on the Status Bar of the Home screen, however, if I swipe the bar to open the Notification Panel, the WiFi icon is always illuminated.  And if I press the illuminated WiFi icon, it does not extinguish.

In about six weeks of use since new, the WiFi has never before given any trouble.  Not knowing whether this might be connected to the failure of the boot animation (improbable, I know, but who can plumb the depths of an Android developer's mind?), I restored the original bootanimation.zip file, then I shut the phone off and rebooted.  No change.  So I shut it off again and removed the battery, left it out five full minutes, then turned it on.  No change.

Through all of this, there is no indication the WiFi actually is working.  No indication it has logged on to my WiFi router, and the AirMirror running on my PC can't seem to communicate with it.

I would be more inclined to believe the WiFi has failed if all of the indications were that the WiFi is inop.  Instead, they disagree.  Some (appear to) switch on but won't stay that way.  Another appears permanently switched on and refuses to turn off.  All of which smells to me of a software glitch.

I have been mercilessly experimenting with new apps for its entire young life, so the phone is about due a factory reset anyway, which I'd reckon also is my last hope of mending this if it is indeed software.  But before I take that step, for my own Android education, I thought to ask here whether anyone else has any ideas to fix it, and if there are any diagnostics I have overlooked.

    Thank you for your time.

At this juncture I don't mind having to reset the phone.  But if it should happen again at some later date, when I can less afford to be without it, it would be nice to know how to correct it short of something so extreme.

If I had bothered to look under System Settings, Hardware, for the WiFi MAC address, I'd have seen it says "Unavailable."  The other signs might have been ambiguous but that one was pretty unequivocal.

Stick it with a fork, it's done.

In fact I did two factory resets.  But once I saw it couldn't read the NIC's MAC address, I was fair certain it was TU.
