I want to change the sound when I get a text message ONLY.  Currently the sound plays when I get emails as well as any other notification.  Is there a way to just change it so it only plays for a text message?  I'm afraid to go rooting around with ES File Explorer, as I don't know what I'm doing when I get there.  Anyone feel like giving a tutorial for the LG Optimus Q?  Is it even possible to change just the text message sound and not every other notification?

You should be able to do this using Llama, I think, it allows you to set up sounds for different profiles/apps...

Are you using gmail or the another email client?
If you are using Gmail, you can set the ringtone for each gmail account by going to settings in gmail, then click on the account you want to change, not the General settings. There is a checkbox for Email notifications, and below it is settings for ringtone & vibrate. You can change the tone and set it to vibrate from there, just for that one account. I have 4 gmail accounts on my phone, and each one has a different ringtone. I use the regular system settings, sounds, notifications to set my SMS tone. There is also a setting there to just announce the first email, or to notify for every email received.

    Hope this helps.

Maybe skip the download of a .doc

How To Make Custom Ringtones & Notification Tones With The                                                                              MP3 of Your Choice & Have Two Seperate Notification Tones The Easy Way
    1.   Get the mp3 you want.
1a. If you have the mp3 skip to step 2.
1b. Open the Youtube app & find your song of choice using  the search function.
EX: type in Skrillex tap on one you like say Cinema, tap circle with down arrow & copy url.
For ease of use and sake of this guide I recomend you use Dolphin Browser HD with Easy
DownloaderPro altho any browser  will work.
1c. Open HD Browser and go to m.makeitmp3.com Long press in the video url box & select paste, select    audio quality desired & tap convert. After a few seconds scroll down & tap "continue to your downlaod".
Scroll down & tap your song to retrive it if your using easydownloaderpro plugin tap ok.
    2. Locate your mp3 you just downloaded using ES File Explorer, if you used EasyDownloaderPro           /sdcard/EasydownloaderPro/music.
2a. Short press on your mp3 & open with ES media player.
2b. Press on the alarm bell @ top right & set as Ringtone, Alarm, or Notification.

Notice to all you have no need to grant ES File Explorer root & you do not need to mount system as writable within ES's system settings. Our phone is already rooted & ES was designed for rooted phones. Be forewarned!!!
Lastly if you want a seperate notification tone for messaging & a different one for all other notifications go to home screen & tap messaging open settings by selecting the square quick key
& scroll down to select ringtone. Open with android system not ES & select ringtone of your choice.
Hit home key & then bring up settings by using square quick key. Select sound. Select notification ringtone & open with android system & finally select a different ringtone.
Thats all there is to it if you follow this guide and use recomended apps you will have custom ringtones in under 2 minutes without a pc. Enjoy
This Guide was made by Killericarus for AA51 & is intended for LG L55C phones using ARQ
