Hey everyone. I just recently became interested in rooting my Precedent after having it for a few years. Yesterday I rooted it, but now I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed by all of this information floating around. What should I do next?

I'm also a bit confused about Clockworkmod. Does it just replace the recovery mode built into your phone or does it do something else?

I'd really love to get some feedback from you guys. I can't wait to start customizing my phone ;D

Cwm is a custum recovery enabiling you to backup your rom, which is your android os, and flash kernels, the brain, and other goodies like boot animations n such. Google app packs too.

Roms allow you to do diffrent things depending on the rom.

Like cyogen mod or cm7.1 enables you to do vm heap which cimpresses a portion of your ram for unused apps for faster speed.

Both arearom and cyogen mod have app2sd built in

You will need to backup your card and then partition it in cwm

    I never went over 2gb, 0mb swap

Then go to usb and mounts
Copy ur sd card stuff back and the ron you want to flash and then
    Wupe data factory reset
    Wipe cache
    Advanced/wipe dalvik cache

    Then back

Then install zip from sd card

    Then flash rom

    Boot

    Reboot after 5 min

I have a good post in the cm7.1 setting that will get you set up nice

    Its great for niobs

And if u wanna use arearom

    Do my post
Learn how to flash a rom
Then just do arearom the samish way [arearom dosent have vm heap]

    Have fun

VM Heap doesn't really help with prolonging battery life despite what you may tell yourself.yes..it helps to speed up the responsiveness of the device, but just like overclocking it drains the battery very quickly.unlike OC though,it doesn't have any adverse effects on the battery itself except for you having to charge it thrice daily.the latest arearom has an increased VM heap and yes its nice but as I said it saps juice very quickly.

There are various root apps that allow you access to the VM heap.so no..you don't have to flash a badly ported prevail rom to get into the VM heap.32 is fast enough on an armv6 device.anymore and you are just watching the battery die.

Clockwork allows you to flash roms from your SD if you have them installed on it.it also allows rebooting and other things.I rarely use it but its somewhat useful.

Ofcourse vm heap dosent save battery but dose increase performance.

I always set mine to 32mb, 48mb showed no increase in performance over 32mb.

    CM is ported just fine.

You can like what you like, I can like what I like, others can like what they like.
I always recomend trying a variety of roms untill a user finds what is the best fit for them. And then learning how to do more mods, to custum taylor that rom to what they want even more.

The only issue I have with cm though. And it is a rather heafty issue but managable is that there is no "update profile option" so if I need to I always haft to flash arearom and then flash back.

The only other issue I found was non working gps. But I modded the build.prop a little and got it working. That updated build.prop file is on my how to guid for cm 7.1 install.

Thankyou for your opinions and thankyou for pointing out that the way I wrote my responce insinuated that vm heap saves battery which was not what was intended.

Cwm also enables you to flash any cwm install, roms, boot animations, apps, theams, kernels, or anything that somebody puts into a cwm flashable zip.

The same files can be installed manualy, however I recomend you know what your doing before you do that. Its pretty simple, just read up on it.
    Cwm makes the process easy.

Just remember for a rom, wipe everything.
For any other cwm flashable, dont wipe stuff. Install it over rom.
