So, I need to remap the power button to something else on my wife's Precedent. The button itself doesn't work. I thought maybe there was a glitch in her phone, so I upgraded to AR3.4, but then I discovered that it's the button itself that has failed. I couldn't back up a step in CWM recovery. Is there any way to remap the power button to another hard button? Barring that, how do I get the darn thing working again? I'm so lost.

      Android is King
*this can also be done using a text editor locally on your phone provided*

U might try this if u got root explorer or similiar app then go to system/usr/keylayout there will be more files try to find the exact one and zip it then copy it to your computer and use notepad++ to edit it... just explore its files to kno what its what and wat its map to. after ur done edited save it.
BEFORE EDITING...make sure u backup the original file or make a nandroid backup just in case, later replace it back to system/usr/keylayout/and change its permissions as the others.

    Reboot
    HOPE U DID A BACKUP/NANDROID BACKUP

    system/usr/keylayout/qwerty.kl

I switched values for POWER and CAMERA.
    New values are as follows:

    212 POWER   WAKE
    116 CAMERA

I'll just leave this here for the next person who needs it. Thanks again, Blaze.

As an aside, CWM has a key test setting. Give that a shot and see if our button is truly dead. :)

I also want to remap my power button to the camera button (same phone) but not for the same reason.
I dropped it and now the power/hibernate button gets stuck and reboots constantly, though I can turn it on, I can't press the power button again to close the screen without it going on the fritz again.

I would remap it the same way necro did but my USB port went out long ago so I just got an external charger and swap out batteries once or twice a day, so I'm unable to do it through my pc.

I also downloaded a root manager app but it won't asks me "how I would like to complete the task" without giving me any options to actually complete the task to open the qwerty.kl section.

Is there a way to remap through the phone?

After downloading a couple of more file managing or root apps, I found one where I could get into the qwerty.kl file and edit but I keep getting an error message saying it cannot be saved.

Any advice? Or should I just break down and get another phone?

most file managing apps need root permission.....check the settings in the app itself and see if theres not a permission setting there.....
