Author Topic: How to setup Wi-Fi tether on the rooted Samsung Proclaim(may work for others)

Topic Modified: 07/03/13 (12:16) PM
Use Es File explorer and open as text file> /system/build.prop and add this line "ro.tether.denied=false" without the quotes. If you already have this line modify it to say false, if not at it as the last line.. Save and then reboot twice.

Now use this app> https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.googlecode.android.wifi.tether&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5nb29nbGVjb2RlLmFuZHJvaWQud2lmaS50ZXRoZXIiXQ..

Open Wi-Fi Tether and go to settings and change the device profile to "Samsung Galaxy s3"(Some are having better luck with auto)

Now your all set, just turn off your Wi-Fi and turn on your 3G before you start the tether.

With other phones you will have to play with the device profile to find which one works for ya.

Hey trbj, thanks for the tip.

Samsung Proclaim, ST/Verizon.
Samsung came out with an update that killed foxfi access to Mobile Hotspot. I rooted the phone and have been trying to get access, but not even your tip worked. I cannot save the ro line using ES in the system file.

Have you found a way around the new firmware update? It is 2.3.6 and the Kernel is 2.6.35.7-670540 se.infra@SEI-46 #2 PREEMPT Wed Oct 19 07:11:29 KST 2011

You have to go into Es's settings and mount system as writeable before you can save the changes :D

I rooted my proclaim with version S720C.01 VLI02 Sept 2012 using this method http://androidarea51.com/***-all-things-root-***-150/how-to-root-the-proclaim/
I also did the SD Card fix.

Then I followed thereal_bigjake's instructions here and my proclaim's hotspot seems to be working well after a couple reboots.

This was a huge help thank you!
I opened ES, then used the Proclaim's menu button to open Settings, then went to Other Settings/Root settings and chose Root Explorer, the Mount File System and followed the directions.

On to WiFi Tether...

I changed the device to Samsung Galaxy S3. I can "see" the AndroidTether computer to computer network as "On Demand" but I cannot connect to it. I did a reboot after changing the setting and now it has the "upload" "download" counters. I still cannot connect. I had put in a WPA key in my computer, but then I deleted the profile. I now cannot see the AndroidTether at all.

Perhaps I should reboot the PC.

Thanks
Sam

I tired samsung galaxy s3 and it didt work.  Swithed to "auto" and it started working.  I uninstalled "wifi tether for root users" and installed "wireless tether for root users" from the plaly store.  It is from same company but has some features I like better.  There isnt a device profile in the settings for the "wireless tether" it must auto config.  Still took a reboot for everything to work normal.

I installed wireless tether for root users and it is working now, thanks again. I turned on Enable Access Control and then accept users, it is working fine. I am struggling with Wifi Encryption, I can't get the connect unless it is off, any ideas?

I have tried everything in this thread and it's still not working.  Frustrating!  I had the paid version of Foxfi so now I have wasted $7 and can't get anything to work for wifi hotspot.

When I used WiFi tethering it says "hotspot started with errrors"
When I use Wireless tethering everything looks good on the phone (tethering started) but no other devices can see the broadcast.

I have rebooted the phone about 10 times so that's not it.

anyone else having the same issues?

While the WIFI tether program sucks balls, between the random restarts the inability to show up on computers or other devices the line of code ro.tether.denied=false will allow PDA Net to work again. I am sending this message right now with the help of PDA Net !

Can anyone tell me how to restore wifi on the Samsung Galaxy Proclaim?

Did the firmware update, I guess it was last month, and been regretting ever since.

Note: this phone is rooted: ( only rooted after My wifi/ foxfi stopped working. )
Rooting has not solved the wifi + Fofi hotspot issue.

Note: Super user, terminal emulator, busybox version 1.19, Titanium backup, root explorer, es file explorer
and Foxfi full version/with key all have been installed.

Phone Stats are as follows:

Read the post again, pdanet is a USB tether. Foxfi will not work because they deleted the wifi tethering ability. That's why wifi tether is a hit or miss because it brings its own drivers.
You can download the trial of pdanet to verify it works before purchase, I'm sure foxfi will recover after they come up with an exploit. In the mean time be patient ! If you really want true wireless wifi you can USB tether to windows and bridge to a wifi or ethernet connection

Proclaims running AreaRom v1.1 PDANet (tether) and Foxfi(bluetooth only) were tested and work. I didn't get the wifi hotspot to work with any of the configs I  tried  or a few  other  apps I tested but something out there has to work. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK! If you're still not sure read the ST TOS.

To get the WiFi to actually start with WiFi for Root Users, I had to go back to version 3.2-Beta1 on my Avail (Same WiFi hardware as the Proclaim)
All newer versions of this app had the dreaded "wifi not started" error, and all others failed miserably due to having a AT&T based ROM (Would fail AT&T Tethering authentication. Of course it would fail, I'm not an AT&T customer!)

(This version can be found on the Dev's Website, link to the website on the App's PlayStore page)

Not sure if it will help with the Proclaim, but worth a shot
