This new version of the Samsung Galaxy SIII released for Straight Talk (S986C),
had no valid root methods... Until now!

Cydia Impactor, and Towelroot will not work on phones manufactured after May 2014.
Using the guide below will roll back your system to the previous rootable version.

PLEASE NOTE: I CAN NOT OFFER ONE-ON-ONE ASSISTANCE; PLEASE DO NOT CONTACT ME ASKING FOR SUCH.

UPDATE:  Here is an updated tutorial I wrote up, downloadable for offline use, in a PDF. (attached below)

Steps to root Samsung Galaxy SIII [H2](Aug 7th 2014 model):
    [
I am using Linux, steps may differ for other operating systems]

NOTE:  Read ALL directions thoroughly before doing any steps.  Following these steps is AT YOUR OWN RISK!

    1. Install Heimdall for your operating system (works with Linux, MacOS, & Windows) [Some Linux users may have to build it themselves, and that will not be discussed on this tutorial, it can be found elsewhere]

    2. My installation of Linux did not require additional drivers to be installed, but you may require libusb, or windows users will likely require usb drivers for their specific device. [If you require drivers for Linux, something like:  "sudo apt-get install libusb" without the quotes, might do the trick.]

    3. Download "COMBINATION_S968CUDUAMH1_S968CTFNAMH1_1304014_REV09_user_low_ship.tar.md5" available elsewhere on this forum. (Use Search)

    4. Rename the file above to remove the .md5 extension, leaving .tar on the end. (this step may not be required for some)

    5. Extract the above file to a directory of it's same name.

    6. Open Heimdall. (as root)

    7. Enable "USB Debugging" on your phone.

    8. Put your phone into Download Mode by pressing the following buttons with your phone OFF.
Volume Down + Home + Power,
and hold all 3 until you see Download Mode.
If your phone boots normally, turn it off and try again (Google it if you need more help with getting your phone into Download Mode).

    9. Connect your phone to your computer with it's provided USB Cable.

    10. Go to "Utilities" tab.

    11. Click "Detect Device". If you see "ERROR: Failed to detect compatible download-mode device." You have done something wrong, DO NOT continue any further, until you have resolved this.  (You didn't follow the directions and make sure proper drivers were installed.)

    12. If your device was successfully found Download your PIT file. (Give it a name you will remember, you need to find it in the following steps.)

    13. Click the "Flash" tab.

    14. Under Options PIT browse to the location of the PIT file you just saved.

    15. Under "Partitions (Files)" click the "Add" button.

    16. Using the following chart.. line up each image part with it's proper slot.

Code: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

    ABOOT     -     aboot.mbn
    BOOT     -     boot.img
    CACHE     -     cache.img.ext4
    MODEM     -     NON-HLOS.bin
    PERSIST     -     persist.img.ext4
    RECOVERY     -      recovery.img

    SBL1     -     sbl1.mbn
    SBL2     -     sbl2.mbn
    SBL3     -     sbl3.mbn
    SYSTEM     -     system.img.ext4
    TZ     -     tz.mbn

WARNING - DOING anything below this step may brick your device, and make it not usable, only experienced people should follow these steps.

    17. If you are sure you have done everything correctly up to this point.  Press "Start", and wait while your images are copied to your phone. This step may take a while. Just relax and take a deep breath. DO NOT EVER UNPLUG YOUR PHONE DURING THIS PROCESS!!

    18. If all went well, you should see something like this:

    19. At this point you have successfully digressed your [H2] version to [H1] version, which is now
    rootable.

    You are halfway there!

    20. Download Cydia Impactor: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login and unzip it to a folder on your PC.

    21. Your phone should still be connected to your pc with it's supplied USB Cable, and USB
Debugging should already be enabled due to the previous steps.

    22. Run Cydia Impactor (Impactor.exe)

    23. It should say: “# drop SuperSU su to /system/xbin/su” in the selection box, then click Start.

    24. Install SuperSU from the App store.

    25. You are done! Congratulations, your phone is now rooted and ready to explore, hack, or run
rooted software on. (I recommend installing Droidwall, AdFree, & Titanium Backup Pro as a first
few great programs. When you are more comfortable with your phone, I recommend checking out
Xprivacy to control which permissions on your phone apps have access to.)

Want to hack further?  Install a custom recovery like ClockworkMod Touch:

    26. Download: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

    27. Rename it to recovery.img

    28.
In Heimdall-frontend click to the "Utilities" tab and click “Detect”.  Make sure your device is detected successfully.  (It should be in download mode, and connected to the computer with USB).

    29. Click to the "Flash" tab and under Options / PIT click "Browse" and point it to your *.pit file.

    30. Under Options / Partitions (Files) click the “Add” button.

    31. Under Options / Partition Details / Partition Name in the drop down selector choose:  RECOVERY, click “Browse” in this same section, and select the “recovery.img” file from step 27

    32. Under Options / Session check mark the “No Reboot” option.

WARNING - DOING anything below this step may brick your device, and make it not usable, only experienced people should follow these steps.

    33. Now recheck that you have done all the steps up to this point correctly.  If you are 100% satisfied that you have.  Then gather up your courage..  and press the “Start” button.

If everything was done properly, after a short wait, you should see: “Flash completed successfully”.

    Congratulations!!

    34.
Disconnect your USB cable, and turn the phone off by long pressing the power button.

    PS:
You can skip steps 28 – 33 if in step 16 you replace the original “recovery.img” with the one in step 26 – 27. This makes it much easier, but only if you want the custom ClockworkMod Recovery installed.
Start your phone normally, or check out the ClockworkMod Recovery, by  pressing and holding Volume Up, Home, and Power at the same time, until it vibrates.
Now that you have a custom recovery, the first thing I recommend doing is: BACKING UP YOUR PHONE, so that if you ever have a disaster you have something to repair it with.

    Backing up your phone (Recommended):

    35.
Press and hold Volume Up, Home, and Power at the same time, until it vibrates. This will put your phone into Recovery Mode.

    36.
You should see a logo, and then ClockworkMod Recovery v6.0.4.5 at the top, and a list of options. Select “backup and restore” by touching it with your finger. Then select “backup to /sdcard”.

    37.
Now just wait until the backup says it is complete, and relax, because you made it this far.
Once it is done, select “+++++Go Back+++++”, and then select “reboot system now”.

    Congratulations once again
, because if you have followed this tutorial all the way through,
you now have a rooted S986C straight talk phone, with custom recovery, and a backup

If any of my info on this thread has helped you, please give me a "Thank You" on my post.

I hope my experimentation helps someone else to root their phone.

Blazer, I've read carefully about cydia, I have the drivers and debug enabled. Motorhead, I've tried towelroot also but the only version I can find is in chinese, the version over at xda is asking fir an $8 donation, I don't mind paying but I do t have a paypal account or a way to pay online, I don't use money online or use debit or credit online, I don't care what safeguards there are I don't give the thieves a door and limit access to my personal info no matter who it is, I only use my cards in person not electronically, kjnda inconvenient sometimes but I take no chances, anyrhing can be hacked, what we do here is proof of that. Thanks for the pointers though, blazer ill check your link, motorhead, ill try to find an english version of towelroot. Thanks guys

Daddy366, when I click your link it tells me the file is not available, could you explain what the OP was talking about in his posts, I have Odin not hiemdall, do I need to pull some files from my phone, if so how do I do that and what do I use to make the changes he's talking about and where do I make the changes, I can handle it if I know what tools to use and what files, if you can help me with that maybe, I can google the rest on how to do it I just need to know what pieces I need to put my puzzle together, ill handle making them fit. This roadblock is killing me and I'm determined to get past it, maybe ill get it one day, lol. I'm enjoying the journey thoroughly though, I must say, I'm at my best with a challenge.

Have none of you tried Towelroot?

Yes and it won't work on the new version, both bugs were patched.
It will probably work after you digress to the previous H1 version, as Cydia Impact works.

It says my device isn't supported, I guess ill have to find the tar.md5 from the top of this thread, the links I'm finding here aren't working, if I can find it ill follow the post carefully and get it flashed so I can root it normally. Thanks again though.

Ok Rick, I've got the md5 downloaded, renamed and extracted to folder of same name, I have hiemdall installed on pc, I understand the connecting to hiemdall and selecting my tar file, but where you say to download PIT file, does hiemdall pull it from my devices system or do I have to download from the web then insert? Just making sure I have my files and steps right before I start so I don't brick this thing.

Steps to root Samsung Galaxy SIII (Aug 7th 2014 model): [I am using Linux, steps may differ for other operating systems]

    3. Download "COMBINATION_S968CUDUAMH1_S968CTFNAMH1_1304014_REV09_user_low_ship.tar.md5" available elsewhere on

    4. Rename the file above to remove the .md5 extension, leaving .tar on the end. (this step may not be required for some)

    5. Extract the above file to a directory of it's same name.

    6. Open Heimdall.

Thank You, and I hope my experimentation helps someone else to root their phone.

DISCLAIMER WARNING:  Neither I nor AndroidArea51 take any responsibility for you flashing or rooting your phone.  While this method worked for me, it may not work for everyone, and some technical skill is required!

How is this done with Odin instead of Hiemdall? The OP sent me a pm describing this process and said it might be easier to use Odin because I could flash the file without having to line up the img files, what do I do different using Odin

    2. My installation of Linux did not require additional drivers to be installed, but you may require libusb, or windows users will likely require usb drivers for their specific device. [If you require drivers for Linux, something like:  "sudo apt-get install libusb" without the quotes, might do the trick.]

are the drivers auto installed by windows 7 sufficent or do i need specific samsung drivers or what? has any one used windows and this root method? this information (mostly because he used linux) is not really clear to me.

I just rooted my ST Galaxy S3 using the firmware so graciously provided by other posters.  I used this guide to install it using Odin:

You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

It seems to have worked perfectly.  I used Cydia Impactor, installed SuperSU, and enabled wifi tethering using this guide:

It all seems to work. I am a happy camper.  This was my first ever attempt at rooting a phone.

Ok, for everyone coming here to root their sch-s968c's whether they have an H1 or H2 device and you want to find the latest ROMs then look here:
You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

You will find discussions on ROMs the previously didn't have working service, data or MMS now have a working fix for most of the ROMs, there is even a working CM12 (5.0 Lollipop!!!!!) with the click of a few settings and any random micro sim or regular sim trimmed down to fit micro, there is a camera fix and a data/MMS fix for the d2vzw ROMs from older builds. All is explained in the thread and some of it still being worked out as I type this post, they've come a long way with these ROMs in just the past two days and MORE to come maybe even kernel tweaks for our device, happy hunting guys, ENJOY!

was your device an H2 manufactured after Aug 7 2014! Trying to confirm if a normal flash with Odin is working on the H2 devices with no issues versus using Heimdall. The date makes a difference.
