Hello, I need some help. First I will say that I have read through the forums here and across XDA, and am just hoping to get some simple insights before attempting the steps from the other forums I have collected. My mother has this damnable Straight Talk version of the S3. It's stuck at 4.1.3 or whatever natively came on it and the fitness tracker she purchased isn't compatible with anything lower than 4.3 apparently. There are no returns on her tracker, and her phone is capable, but alas ST is never going to push an update so the only option left is root and install something like CM 10.2.1 (final stable release) or above to rectify this problem.

The good news is she's H1 not H2, so I feel somewhat safe in attempting a lot of what I've seen in the forums. What I'm needing to know is if that stable version, or any other version 4.3 or higher, doesn't break MMS, Camera, Calling, Data, etc? I know that at a certain point in CM you have to have a Verizon sim (we don't have one) to fix things, so I need to stay far away from those.

I can't afford to brick her phone so I'm attempting to be very careful and have spent 9 hours today combing the info that's out there (including the massive XDA root thread, which I read the first 36ish pages of). I have downloaded the H1 backup file you all have been kind enough to provide (thanks Motorhead and company) in the even of emergency, though I have heard of people not getting there settings back with H1. Is that only the case with individuals who had to downgrade from H2 to H1 so they could root?

What are your recommendations for completely functional software on this device? Thank you so much in advance for any input you all can give. I swear I don't post lightly in any forum until I've tried to absorb everything I can on my own.

    Sincerely,
    Gregor

    Have you had any luck?

The root process may seem intimidating (it was to me).. but after reading all of the threads and getting the step by step guides.. I found that getting ODIN, downloading the H1 baseband and then installing SuperSU from playstore was very easy.  The best part is you can skip that first step since you already are on H1.  8)

The hardest part was finding a ROM.  I prefer having the newest thing.. so I did have to find a 4G Verizon SIM card.. and running CM 12.1, everything works except for MMS for STOCK Messaging.  I use hangouts and it works flawlessly.

Best of luck.  Let us know what ROM you choose.

You have to root the device with towelroot or cydia impactor before superSU is installed.

You can get MMS working by dialing *228 and letting it auto program, then when its done you go to system settings>mobile networks>access point names or system settings>more>mobile networks>access  point names (its in different places depending on which ROM you're on), tap the menu button and select edit, then edit an existing set of APNs on the list that shows in access point names, edit the APNs on the lines that show in the screenshot I'll give you so that they match the screenshot. Edit only the lines shown in the screenshot then when you have them edited as shown, tap the menu button then save the APNs and reboot the device, your MMS should work after that.
