After googling, I ended up here.  I'm wondering if anyone can help me or at least guide me in the right direction.

I have the straight talk galaxy SCH-S968C.  It is running 4.1.2, is there anyway that I can get this to update to 4.4?  Like if I root the phone (using the idiots guide that is posted on this site), then is it possible to some how update it to 4.4.  If this is possible, how do I do it?

Thanks for any help.  I really do appreciate it!

Wow thank you SO much for the quick response!  I figured so.  I just am stuck.  I have this straight talk phone, running 4.1.2, and straight talk will not push the update to the phones, they are saying it's a manufacturer issue, meaning that Samsung is the one that should be pushing this out.  While Samsung is saying that it's straight talk that should be doing this.  And here I am stuck in the middle.

I know I know I get what I pay for, but overall I really have no problem with straight talk.  Their service has been better or at least the same I've had with verizon, for over half the price.  This is the only issue I've had.  And I am just trying to find someway to get to at least 4.3... Is there anything I can do?  Or am I pretty much SOL?   :(

you can't upgrade to OFFICIAL firmware but you CAN root, install custom recovery, and a custom ROM, let me know if you want to do it and help you through it.

      Love to Modify Android.
yeah i was hoping to stay with official android releases and just stay rooted..  but it looks like that isn't an option for the D2VZW phones.  Just be careful with some of the 4.4 custom roms, some have camera issues and some will not get data / mms unless you have a 4g verizon sim card.

    happy flashing!

The straight talk sch-s968c is d2tfnvzw, the Verizon i535 is d2vzw.

Although, the straight talk S3 does actually have an i535 motherboard, its still a completely different device.

Yeah, I think they don't update because of economical reasons, that way they don't have to pay for research and development and the people to do it. A way to save money is all I'm thinking.

Yea that's probably it. It takes a lot of work to make a new version of Android for the phone. But when the phone company releases a update why does TracFone not release it also? That's what I want to know.

Because there is still some development they'd have to do to get it to work on their particular device. Its just like everything else being model number specific, if it isn't specifically put together for each specific model then it won't work. They would have to take the update that is released by the phone manufacturer and add their network and security specific stuff to the update, that still requires r&d and developers, they would be spending the money that I'm saying they are trying to save, they don't want to do that, especially considering that they pay the network that they are running on for the data that is used and offer prepaid unlimited plans at such a low price compared to their competitors paid plans while running on the same network as their competitor.

How do they offer unlimited data(especially now that they raised the high speed data limits without raising the price), at such a low price and make their money? By cutting the cost of research and development, outsourcing technical support to foreign agencies that work for peanuts, rebranding devices from other carriers as those carriers upgrade their product lines instead of developing their own "branded" devices, they merely convert devices that already exist but are no longer sold or supported by their original carriers and then run those devices on the original carriers' network at cut rate prices. They've got a good gimmick going on. Its not hard to make money by repurposing the junk no one else cares to mess with anymore then selling it as your own, very little investment in hardware, software and staff(they have no stores and no sales team, they do have a few representatives that go around to the stores that sale their products and a skeletal structure of support in the country with the majority of support in other countries) and a lot of profit.

I think the Nexus devices(vanilla straight up Google android) are different, they should be able to use any android release as long as its a vanilla build, no issues with crossing models I think(other than modems and bootloaders maybe), not to sure though, I haven't had nexus to mess with.
