Look at the last line of your terminal session: /dev/block/mmcnlk0p13. You wrote to a non-existent block ;).

I apologize if this is too harsh, but alot of this is user-error...

Not too harsh at all, I truly appreciate constructive critism.
I really don't know exactly what I am doing
    Just following directions in tutorials
Good news though, I have adb working on my pc now.
But since it seemed to have been a simple typo (i replaced the b with an n appartenly) I think i will try it from the phone again

yeah i got terminal running on the pc thanks to these easy to follow directions
You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
for real, pass that link around to other noobs such as my self, its almost impossible to screw up, screen shots and everything.  the only problem with these directions is that it says to extract it directly to your C drive and then you should have a folder called Android.  when in reality it creates a different folder on the C drive and puts the Android folder in there and you gotta take the Android folder out manually and put it directly on the C drive.  Other than that that tutorial is dummie proof.

i haven't flashed clockwork yet cuz i'm not sure if i wanna do it from the phone or from the pc
    hmmm decisions decisions lol
but yeah i ran adb shell and su on the pc and it all worked now

    HAHA I did it!!!
I used the pc to back up the stock recovery
and i used the phone to flash clockworkmod

now I do have nandroid now right?  That was the whole purpose behind me doing all this.  I see back up and restore options but it doesn't say nandroid, is it the same thing or whatever?  And if people can flash these things with the terminal on the phone, why confuse people with the pc stuff and the adb stuff that you gotta download and what not.  It was SOOOOO much simpler to just use the phone terminal.

    THANKS FOR THE HELP GUYS!!!!!

Because using the update.zip then manually flashing CWM was the first method we had ;). Now we use odin to install CWM or TWRP then update.zip root that way :).

    Well...
Since I have already flooded this thread with some noob questions
I figured that this would be a good place for this question.

I am interested in the cm9.  But i don't want to ditch my oem gingerbread for it.  Maybe later but I wanna try it out first.  Can I dual boot the rugby?

;D That's what backups are for... And no, we haven't quite figured dualbooting out yet. I've been focusedon getting the 3.0 kernel caught up with arco68's SGW 3.0 kernel.

Correct. Use Titanium backup to save the apps you want to keep. And CM9 comes with it's own kernel.

Well this is crappy.  I can only seem to get titanium back up to back up stuff to the sd directory (internal memory) and not the external_sd.  I have gone to preferences and tried changing it but it won't seem to let me.  I don't mind re-downloading apps but I have some paid for stuff on there.

I have a nandroid back up on there via the clockwordmod.  Would I be better off extracting apps from that via titanium backup?

Paid apps can be re-downloaded without paying again. I have a couple paid apps linked to multiple devices.

is it just me or is the touchscreen on cm9 for rugby pretty buggy?  Last night when i first installed it didn't work out too well but it did later.  This morning when i woke up it took forever for me just to be able to unlock the phone and shut off the alarm.  I had to restore gingerbread before going to work because it was simply unmanageable, I could barely navigate the apps.
