Hi.  I'm currently working on a new rom.  This rom is going to be a pure Gingerbread rom for the Precedent - no AreaRom or Cyanogenmod tweaks or apps.

I've started with a base rom, and through editing the APK files and using some stuff from the prevail and Android SDK, I was able to get a nearly 100% stock Gingerbread.

The only 2 problems - the fonts are stock Gingerbread, but not set up the same.  As in, Clockopia is included, but only used in the clock app, and not the lockscreen.  Stuff like that.  All around the ROM, I need to change the fonts to stock.

Also, the SystemUI is not stock.  It has a different bar - it's a gray/black fade with a pull-down power control widget.  Being that this phone is LDPI, not MDPI, I can't use the SDK to help at all.  I've tried the SystemUI.apk from some other Samsung phones with similar specs - the ones running stock Android, not TouchWiz - and can't get it to work.  I've also tried keeping the manifest and changing the resources within the APK - it still hasn't changed.

If anyone could walk me through the process to edit the way Android uses fonts (most likely a file somewhere in the Framework?) and porting over the SystemUI.apk from another phone, I would greatly appreciate it.

Once I finish the interface, the only 2 things left (that I can see so far) are fix the call-log from force closing, and re-theme the lockscreen slider to have the stock, transparent Gingerbread sliders.  I am really close to a stock Gingerbread, and any help would be appreciated, as I am still relatively new to making custom ROMS, and don't have much experience theming with the SystemUI or Framework :-)

then my only question is how are you going to BOOT it up, you will need AreaRom GingerBread Boot Loaders on the phone since the Precedent DOESNT Have gingerbread to start with... you have to have gingerbread bootloaders and kernel and recovery to work on the precedent, and so far we are the only ones to make the bootloaders that work with precedent. based off the prevail gingerbread bootloaders they had to be modified for the radio and secondary bootstrap to load correctly.

I am surely not trying to stop him as a base gingerbread rom has been requested a few times.. i am just curious as to his extent of knowledge on this end of the spectrum...

[/quote]Just to be clear, I have used Odin to get the Gingerbread bootloaders, and used an already functional Gingerbread ROM as a base, and worked from their to make it a "pure" gingerbread.  It is already functional.  Like the Cyanogenmod build, the AreaRom bootloaders will be needed.

ok cool, i was just curious as to the bootloaders.. since there isn't a true gingerbread for the precedent.. and as long as you started with a mdpi pure gingerbread from the beginning there shouldn't be any issues, if you started with anything other than that.. you will run in to some issues as far as lockscreen and force closes of alot of the apk's

Honestly I had already made just a Plain GB Rom for the Precedent, from an AOSP build that loads and works, i just have not Released it as its just that PLAIN and with only having a couple requests for Just a Plain Base i didn't think it would be beneifical to release it, (when i say PLAIN I MEAN PLAIN) no added icons in the menus no added apks no nothing just BASE GingerBread with a Launcher and MMS and Store thats it... (keyboard of course) anything else they want added can be gotten from the store...

Wow...that's like, more bone-dry than mine.  I have the Gingerbread apps (no Gapps except market ATM) but...wow.

Would it be possible, if you are ok with it, to get a copy of the SystemUI.apk and the framework directory and contents?  If not, I can continue on with what I am doing now, but I think this would help me get an earlier release :-)

Also, I got a SHTF error with UOT. :-(

From your description, your ROM sounds a lot like AreaROM 3.0. Of which, there is a "stock" gingerbread version... however, tweaking the build.prop and other things is a necessity on the Precedent. It's not specific to the ROM, it just provides better functionality, responsiveness and overall usability. I would dare say the kernel change is needed too in order to overclock greater than the stock 800Mhz.

Stock Gingerbread is basically the Boost Mobile version of Android for the Prevail... which I believe was the base port for 3.0. You should work on cutting down AR3.0 to stock instead of re-inventing the wheel, but when it comes down to it... it ends up being graphics and some minor apps that are the only thing that isn't "stock" about the ROM.

3.0 is a great base... added apps and tweaks can easily be removed to get it to a stock-like build... and you can check out the Galaxy Nexis mod I created that is about as close to "stock" as you can get thus far.

Now, I would say that the 3.0 ROM could be cut down a lot because there are a ton of unused images and other files that have just accumulated over time and have never been cleaned up. (Like the ldpi folders being removed) I've tried to do some of this, and my ROM's are getting smaller...  but it still needs more done.
