Silly me started altering stuff as soon as I got my previous one out of the box....

Is there need for a fresh stock ROM by anyone?

If so, I'm willing to provide it if someone can provide me with instructions (or point me in the right direction).

Of course, I'll probably try to figure it out myself, but any and all help is appreciated.

Sorry, been away from the forum for a while. Work is having us developers doing full regression testing for a release in a couple weeks, so I've been working late.

I suppose I could do the non-install method of running CWM I saw on the forum and make the nandroid that way, couldn't I? I think I vaguely remember seeing something about backing up the stock restore somewhere on here too.

I'll try to to catch back up, but if you're bored and want to point me in the right directions, I'll gladly accept the help.

As far as the posting it, all I should have to do is make a new properly labeled post with the files (in zip/7z form), right? Or should I contact of of the higher-ups first?

Let me know. I appreciate help.
    Kind of.

Unfortunately, the Net10 Merit does not have the option to flash an update.zip, so a temp CWM isn't going to work.

    You'll have to :
Root your phone using the "jcase adb" method
Then, make a copy to your sdcard of your running stock recovery (to return it to stock if need be) using:
Code: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
    dd if=/mnt/mtd0 /sdcard/stock-recovery.img
    Then install the permanent  CWM.img

My phone is a Net10 merit and I flashed your update, kernel and rooted rom and it worked perfectly.  I'm using it wifi only, never activated it with net10.  Got it for $30 black Thursday at family dollar, it's like an android version of a the ipod touch.  Loving it!

    Nice to hear!

Some users are reporting that there is no "update.zip" option in their recovery.

I guess you were a lucky one.

I know I read somewhere that you go to factory rest & hit the back button to install update.zip.

I used Stayboogy's method.  Copy the update file to root of the sdcard, then:

"Turn your phone off. Hold volume up then the menu key then power key until the phone boots to recovery. Scroll to "Factory reset" and press the "back" key. If you did everything right then you now have CWM on your unrooted Merit. "

We've had reports that it doesn't always work.
But I'm very glad it did work for you.

It's always good to hear success story.
Just remember to flash the permanent image.
Otherwise, it will go back to the stock recovery

Those instructions are different. Phydeux yours say look for update, not factory reset. Would factory reset work on your version?

Different firmware on the different phones.

The Avail and ST Merit have "update.zip"

The Net10 Merit you need to go to "factory reset" and BACK button

I can confirm Phydeux's instructions on the Net10 Merit.

Downloaded Phydeux's You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login (see You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login ), renamed it to update.zip and copied it to the root of the 2Gb sdcard that came with the Merit.

After accessing the stock recovery (which I could only access after taking the battery out and putting it back in?), I moved the menu to "factory reset" using the volume buttons and then pressed the "back" button.

The Merit loaded the CWM recovery into memory and ran it.

I used the temporary CWM to back up the system, and confirmed after restarting that the stock recovery image was intact.

I now have the following files in a .zip (generated by 7-Zip):
    .android_secure.vfat.dup
    boot.img
    data.yaffs2.img
    recovery.img
    system.yaffs2.img

Shall I just make another post labeled in some proper fashion, or is there some other procedure to follow?

    Thank you everyone!   :)

CWM6 is a bit flakey. VERY experimental. And it looks like no real backup made (No nandroid.md5 file)

Get the most recent cwm5 100% (in this forum, or possibly in the Avail/root forum)
     Use it the same way

    recovery.img6,144kb

Pretty close. Data will always vary, as will the .android file. The md5sum's are the real 'critical' part. That tells CWM that the files are still what it put there originally (that's what md5sum's are: A 'record' of the file).

    Looks like they're all there

Apparently, the file attachment choked when I tried making a new post in all things root....

I'll add a few more sources and post after I get a few chores done around here.

Different firmware on the different phones.

The Avail and ST Merit have "update.zip"

The Net10 Merit you need to go to "factory reset" and BACK button

    that's not completely correct.

the ST Merit only has "reboot now" "wipe data:factory reset" and "wipe cache partition"

the Avail is the only one with four options in recovery including the "install sdcard:update.zip"

however, "wipe data:factory reset" doesn't actually wipe anything on the Merit but instead installs update.zip files on the sdcard if they are preset.  i've never tried the option without one there, so not sure if it actually does do a factory reset

also, "wipe cache partition" wipes both /cache and /data, therefore accomplishing a factory reset.
