I have the Net10 version of the Merit 990G and apparently there are some differences. For one, I don't have an update option when I boot into recovery. Has anyone found anything else? I'm really trying not to brick my first Android  :P

Also, I haven't activated the phone yet. Do I need to before I try rooting?

Let me know. I appreciate help.
You may want to 'activate' it first with Net10, because there is always the possibility that you won't be able to afterwards.

(May not matter, but personally, I'd rather be safe than sorry)

Except the stock recovery, it is basically identical to the ST Z990G Merit. As far as hardware goes, it IS identical.
It is ONLY different in software to the Z990 Avail. All three are the same phones, with differing branding. If a ROM or Recovery works on one, it'll work on all three (with SOME exceptions. The "T-Card" method of flashing the Avail to total old stock on the Avail is not going to work on the Z990G's).

As far a s ROMs out there, and recoveries, any of the 'aftermarket' ones will work.

Rooting methods differ from phone to phone.

From info so far received, these are the 'latest' ways to root the Z990 series phones:

Avail: *code, install Superuser, done (How much easier?), If *code does not work, T-Card, then *code
Merit: Update.zip a CWM, then zip flash a rooted rom, "update.zip" a prepared rooted ROM, or jcase's ADB Root method
Merit Net10: jcase's ADB Root, then install a CWM, then flash a rooted rom

Hardware wise, there is no real differences.

Software/Recovery/OS is the differences. After you gain, root, no issues.

You don't have to register to root. Your Net10 phone can also be used on ST if you'd like to save $5 a month.

Net10 drops you to $45 a month if you sign up for auto pay, and apparently taxes/fees are included instead of extra. I currently have a dumb phone on ST that refilled just before I bought the Merit. I tried to get Walmart to price match, but they said they would only do it on the same carrier and didn't carry the Merit for Net10 so no go.
