What do you mean unlocked? Are you wanting to use it for a different carrier? If so which carrier. What are you trying to do in Factory Test Mode?

I want to unlock the Net10 Merit so I can use my AT&T Simm card from my Avail without having to spend $50.00 for one months service from Net10. ZI have my Avail unlocked and checked out with a T-Mobile simm. Purchased the Merit on Black Friday from Family Dollar store for $29.00 just to play with. Have flashed Stayboogy's Metro and Bluesteel roms and they work great.I was just trying to save the  $50.00 if there was a way to unlock the phone without subscribing to a service . As for as the FTM setting, I used the computer to unlock my Avail. Thought maybe I could do the same to the Merit,But can't get the Merit into the FTM mode. Used the volume down and power buttons same as the Avail ,but that doesn't work on the Merit.

I have no way of testing  this but I think all you have to do is put in the correct APN settings & SIM then your good to go.

Tracfone makes it where you can't just insert any SIM card into their phones and their SIM card into any phone.

I have swapped SIM cards a lot. I've had my SIM in several at&t phones so the SIM works I started buying the Net10 phones because they're normally cheaper & ST service because it is cheaper.

I have no benefit to try the other way. If I find a at&t card I'll give it a try.

Let me know. I appreciate help.
    That's the issue with TracFone

While we can "unlock" the AT&T Avail & Straight Talk Merit to use whatever GSM sim you want, the TracFone version (of any Tracfone phone, usually) uses their own firmware and special sim where the sim is locked to a specific phone, and the phone can only use the Tracfone sim.

It makes unlocking a bit of a chore, if it is possible at all, even.

The Straight Talk phone is a Tracfone. I have used a AT&T SIM in my Nokia Tracfone & I'm pretty sure I put on in my Merit. It is possible that the frameware has been updated since then. I bought the Net10 LG for my wife & put her ST SIM in it & just put in the correct APN settings. Had to put the right APN in for the ST Lg ones also tho. No idea why there settings won't work out of the box but I had no data until I put my own in.

Is it possible to modify the Net10 Merit  Frameware to make it unlock or just copy the frameware from one that does unlock over to the Net10 Merit?

I copied my Avail framework folder and installed it on the Merit and it would not boot past the ZTE screen, so I don't think modifying parts of it would work either.

Have you tried any other custum rom installs. Id try doing that n replacing the boot, rom, recovery, kernel, ect then try a known sim unlock method.

I dont have a merit/avail but I did a similar method on the htc rezound from verizion n now have it running on gsm.

SIM unlock has to do with the actual hardware. ROM's are solely software.

Basically, an "unlock code" changes a setting in the (for want of a better word) 'bios' for the phone. A rom changes the operating system. As you can see, they don't interact.

Changing the rom will not unlock this phone.

There IS a way to do it. Just Google "Z990 unlock v1.0.0B29". This changes the actual firmware of the phone.

    You are right

    I was thinking Avail

Sorry. Most things work "both ways", but the Net10 has really messed with the Z990 firmware to plug "holes" that the other 2 phones have.

The SIMs can be used in other phones. It is the phone that is locked to ether ST or Net10 SIMs. The E5 worked with AT&T SIMs also.

What do you mean unlocked? Are you wanting to use it for a different carrier? If so which carrier. What are you trying to do in Factory Test Mode?
There is a site out there that talks about carrier unlocking the Avail using FTM....You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

and I also found this for the avail... You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

I am in the same boat.  One, I don't have access to a windows PC, Im on Linux (Ubuntu) I have a atom powered netbook with no dvd drive and not willining to install windows (and had a heck of a time trying to run an install to an external usb drive to make windows work in my world)

So, I wonder, I have my fone rooted (thanx jcase),
is there someway to get into the works and change the carrier/unlock it through the android terminal emulator or back to the ADB to get into the tracfone/net10 firmware and change something?????

I have another SIM from a ATT service reseller (company is called Life Wireless and the sim is labeled PURE GSM) I signed up for Lifeline (free govt cellphone) and first I was with Tracfones Safelink but found out they wouldnt do my Net10 Merit with the Safelink account, so I signed up for this other service and just got the sim and it wont take it. Goes right to a grey screen says invalid sim and shows a button onscreen for a emergency call......
I know that the lifeline service is just simple fone/text- no data and thats fine I have wifi at home. I mostly wanted it for the GPS and the cam when Im out and about. I had a cheap Chinese epad (wondermedia 8505 PanImage) that I am using Tipstir's rom on but 1.6 sucked and when I saw this fone on sale for 29 bucks at Thanxgiving time I snatched it up.

I am really interested in using Phyduexs rom because of having a SD swap but I wanna make sure I can use the fone for more than a android "ipod touch" mini tablet lol

They are not married like Direct TV does. The SIM is assigned to a phone so if the phone it's turned off without telling them another IMEI that the SIM will be used in they turn it off also.

There is another option I am considering. There is a company called FreedomPop You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

They do free/monthly/as-you-go wifi. For mobile you lease/buy the Photon or a stick. Photon is a hotspot, can connect multiple machines. Stick just works on one at a time. Currently they only use Clear towers, but will be adding Sprint in 2013.

The home page doesn't mention their other programs, just the new home units. Found their FAQ on either Twitter or FB, they have active accounts on both: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

Apparently the Photons won't work on Sprint, so not sure if they will be replacing them or not. Currently you give a $89 deposit for those, after a year it is yours.

For those who are mostly around wifi, this could be an option for those in-between times. At least I hope so ;-)

For anyone still interested in this thread I found this thread You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

Still if the z990 needs FTM to unlock and z990g has no FTM Id say it would take turning the merit into an avail with a complete firmware flash.

When I ran Phydeux's rom (I am gonna assume he developed on an avail) It came up a z990 not a z990g in the system settings)
    So maybe.....
