      Um, okay
Success!!! I purchase a Universal Turbo SIM Unlock Card from DinoDirect, It was a cheap Chinese airmail package that came 2 weeks after ordering and It cost around 5 bucks.  When it arrived, it was not the dual sim solution, but a simple thin film with embedded contacts and chip that sat between fone and sim and works PERFECT.  It unlocked my Net 10 Merit z990g.

      Um, okay
I spoke too soon.  The turbo sim worked just one day and now it says no service, but it does not say invalid sim or Service Provider Locked... as it would if i threw the foreign sim in by itself.  So back to square one.

The thing is, The Z990 (Avail) can be unlocked with Qualcomms tool and a few files when the phone is in FTM. (see You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login)  BUT The firmware for z990g (Merit) as provided by ZTE for Tracfone lacks a FTM mode BUT if I could get the AVAIL firmware on a MERIT, it would HAVE a FTM mode.
Ok thats a recursive problem, so got to think outside the box.

Recently found this on a google search (You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login)
Now, let me just say I am on Linux (Ubuntu) so any windoze EXE I have to run thru Wine.  I downloaded this ZTE tool thingy and and ran it, it was an installer and guess what it produced, a copy of itself GARBAGE!!!!!!!
(Thats exactly WHY I'm on Linux LOL)
BUT they give the directions :  Go to dialer, type *983*87274# and select "only Diag"
So I was thinking is this the same as FTM?  Well I fire up QPST and can't see the fone, but as it is running in a Wine shell, it could be a USB issue and so...
Anyone with a windows PC and a Net10 Merit z9990g, go grab the Qualcomm Product Support Tool and report back if after dialing *983*87274# if the QPST can see the phone.

Second track for unlock.  I really have no problem using Avail firmware on a merit (I am fairly sure they are the same hardware except for ZTE firmwares)
If The Avail can be unlocked by sending those files from the P736TV1.0.0B29.rar using a flashing tool, can they just be reorganized into a package that can be just be flashed using the recovery???? (without the need to recover your wifi MAC with QPST?????

I dunno, I don't know enough about how the recovery works and if  those "hidden" firmware partitions can be flashed using Android.

      Um, okay
Well progressing slowly here.  As I was at a dead end with Ubuntu and Wine I spent the last 2 days trying to figure out how to install win7 from a usb HDD TO the same usb -dif partition and FINALLY succeeded this morning.
So now have working Win setup, I installed QPST build 366 and no go... then figured it may need some drivers SO....
I went to ZTE Brasil, downloaded and installed the ZTE Roamer v860 online upgrade tool....
and VOILA! The QPST sees my phone on com4!!!!!! I still have to play with QPST and figure out how it works.  I will extract all the NVRAM out of it and run the files through meld and see what the differences are with that Avail ~29 .rar package

If I was braver, I would flash the phone using that ZTE roamer tool, but I dunno if I am there yet.

Working with ADB on Linux, I was able to see the device in debugging mode as T736_TF and when it was in CWM recovery it identified as Roamer recovery in ADB

IS anyone else interested in this stuff?

Ukuleleman, tried the *983*87274# ,selected Diag, and downloaded the nvram to savethe WiFi settings. Flashing the unlock program worked the first 5 steps but rebooted the phone on step  6/100. Retried 3 times ,but did the reboot every time.  I tries Phydeux's suggestion using Avail stock recovery, but that  still would not boot into FTM mode. Still willing to try other suggestions.

      Um, okay
OK so u have a messed up Merit then, oldretiredman?  Maybe we can blindly accidently fix it and unlock a merit LOL

I have been poking around trying to satisfy my questions before flashing anything quite yet. BUT do you have a working recovery?

I found on ZTE Brasil this :http://www.ztebrasil.com.br/products/mobile/detail/Portugal/Portugal_mobile/detail/201111/t20111128_265637.html

    It is the ZTE Roamer
While reading the PDF that accompanies the Online Upgrade Tool, It says it upgrades the Austrailian V9 Tablet, this Brasilian Roamer, and some China Mainland model that appears to be a Blade.  Also states that one particular model does not need to be in FTM to flash with this tool.  (very interesting...)
I was thinking about trying it.  I have run the stock rom of the Brasilian Vivo Roamer on my Merit with no issues
it is the GB VBR.... file here (You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login) set up for a CWM flash BUT I suspect the ZTE online tool probly updates ZTE firmware too.
I know I read where some ZTE Blade users have had similar boot loop problems going from Gen1 to Gen2 partition table  worth checking that all out too.

Ok, can you see the phone in QPST?????
You have your NV (qcn saved?)

If you can make a connection with QPST we MIGHT have a solution, maybe
I will say I am able to connect to the QPST with my rooted merit running AreaRom (stock phone firmware) when it is booting and starting my custom boot animation ....

If you can get the QPST tool to work and see your phone try this...
go to the QPST>bin folder on your PC and run RF NV Manager and take a look at  453 NV_FTM_MODE... one byte maybe 1=on 0 =off
Im just guessing at all this cuz just a monkey with a typewriter, maybe Ill eventually type some Shakespeare LOL

Yes, I can see the phone in QPST and have downloaded the NVRAM and have it saved on my Windows computer.
I also ran the Unlock.exe program but the phone reboots on step 6/100. My phone is still OK even after installing the Avail stock recovery and trying to get it to enter FTM mode. I still have CWM.

Tried the T-card  for the Avail on the Merit . It loaded OK but all it did was install Anroid 2.3.4 OS and did nothing else. Still had Phydeux' s rom and all my apps. Restored Merit stock rom and it reinstalled version 2.3.5. Still working with different options.

I did find the 453 NV_FTM_MODE line and compared it with the Avail line. Both were the same. So I installed the Avail NV backup in the Merit, but still no FTM mode. I then ran the unlock.exe program on the Merit but it still rebooted on step 4. So back to square one. I reinstalled the Merit NV backup and restored the stock Merit rom.

It works. The drawback is it costs $25. It was worth it for me unless an easy free way has been found.

Let me know. I appreciate help.
Due to changes in the law about unlocking phones since the date that this thread was started,
we do not feel 'comfortable' continuing this thread.

Sorry, I'll have to lock it for now.

Depending on future legislation, this may change, but we at AndroidArea51 cannot really advocate unlocking at this point.

    Thank you for understanding.
